The curriculum is the core of education and the baic approach to the realization of educational aim. The educational contents and values mainly are materialized by curriculum. High school Eenglish curriculum is the core of high school English education, the embodiment of high school English educational value and the basic approach to reaching its educational aims. In this dissertation, writer takes the contemporary reform and development of high school English curriculum in China as disquisitive object, including the development of high school English curriculum theory and the curriculum practice from 1978 to 2008.In this period, Chinese high school English currirulum developed very fast, it is necessary and useful to study it's developing phases of histoty and the development of the theory of high school English curriculum. So this dissertation makes a study of the establishment of high school English syllabus (or curriculum standard), the compiling and use of English text book, the application of English teaching method and the modes of English teaching estimate as its main contents, further, probing into the problems that presented in the newly-carried reform of high school English curriculum. The aim of the study is to summarize the experience and lessons from the development of high school English curriculum, guiding and supporting the reform of high school English curriculum which is on the way. There are six chapters in this dissertation.The first chapter, Prolegomenon, expatiated on the significance, the theory and the method of this study, and also the frame of this dissertation.The second chapter, Literature Summerization, expatiated on the actuality of the relevant studies in this field, Summarizing the accomplishment and shortage in the studying, and stating the further accomplishment that this dissertation wants to reach.The third chapter expatiated on the development of the theory of high school English curriculum, analyzing the evlvement of the concept of English curriculum and some correlative concepts, such as the English syllabus(or English curriculum standard),English text book,English teaching method and the estimate of English teaching. So that we can make it clear what is the essential of high school English curriculum and take the reins of the development of the theory of high school English curriculum, guiding the reform of high school English curriculum which is on the way.The fourth chapter expatiated on the phases of the reform and development of high school English curriculum, analyzing the background in each phase from the the angles of politics, economy, culuture and education and pointed out the the measures that adopted in high school English curriculum reform. At last, make a summarization and analysis of the characteristic of high school English curriculum reform in each phase.The fifth chapter expatiated on the practice of high school English curriculum in China, analyzing the establishment of high school English syllabus (or curriculum standard), the compiling and use of English text book, the application of English teaching method and the modes of English teaching estimate,especially, expatiated on the problems that presented in the newly-carried high school English curriculum reform, analyzing the new ideas of English teaching which sparkpluged in the new English Curriculum Standatd for Junior School, the development of English teaching materials, the trend of English teaching method and the influence that they made to high school English teaching. At last, gives some advice and suggestions to the solving of these problems, summarizing the experences to guide the high school English curriculum reform which is on the way.The sixth chapter expatiated on the revelation of the development and reform of high school English curriculum in China, analyzing the "time-wasted and lower efficiency" problem which exists in high school English curriculum and giving some suggestions to solve these problems. In this chapter, writer points out if we wanted to make sure of the success of high school English curriculum reform, we must do some reform of the system of English education in China, and the fist thing we should do is to make a full understanding of the orientation of high school English curriculum in China, the second is to develop the teacher's profession.
