School guidance in Taiwan is marked by features of "sample significance" and "model value" in the school education of Chinese communities, but so far there is still no systematic study on the development of school guidance in Taiwan. This study attempts to carry out a series of more systematic researches on it from the perspectives of the history and reality, guided by the research ideas of "vertical and horizontal linking" and "integration of history and comments", with the methods of literature, historical comparison, case study, oral history (interview), on-site inspection and so on.The rise of school guidance in Taiwan has a certain historic inevitability. For over 50 years, school guidance in Taiwan has gone through six developmental processes, with different tasks and character in each process:(1) School guidance began to appear in the mid of 1950s under the collective influences by a variety of factors. Among them, the education to the children of overseas Chinese in Taiwan became the direct driving force. The guidance to the children of overseas Chinese in Taiwan was a beginning of school guidance. (2) In the early and mid of 1960s, a series of experimental explorations on school guidance were carried out, which brings a lot of experiences in the establishment of school guidance and prepared the ground for it. (3) From the late of 1960s to the 1970s, school guidance officially formed and became a kind of educational system with the guidance fully implementation in the "nine-year state education" middle schools as a symbol. (4) In the 1980s, school guidance entered a stage of all-round development and continuous improvement, and formed a relatively complete system of guidance. (5) From the early 1990s to the middle and latter half of the 1990s, with the formulation and implementation of "six-year guidance program", the professional efficiency of school guidance was fully improved. (6) From the late 1990s until now, along with the "integration" concept and the policy change to the movement of educational reform, school guidance conducted a difficult transition in a controversy-plagued process.In the historical process of more than half century, the development of school guidance in Taiwan has its own prominent feature, full of successful experiences, deficiencies and problems. Meanwhile, the development of school guidance is facing opportunities and challenges. The development of school guidance in Taiwan brings many useful inspirations to the mental health education in the Chinese mainland that is still in the stage of exploration and development.
