The thesis inspects and combs the evolutionary course of the New Enlightenment Movement in detail against the thought cultural and social political background of China in the 30-40 years of the 20th century based on rich materials from newspaper and magazine or the works of the participants. The thesis tries to answer the following questions: what political, thought and cultural opinions did the New Enlightenment Movement offer? What kind of historical relationship existed between the Sinofication initiated by the New Enlightenment Movement and the Sinofication of Marxism advocated by Maozedong? Why did the New Enlightenment Movement named the May fourth movement as enlightenment movement? Whether can it deepen our understanding of the Chinese enlightenment issue by analyzing the New Enlightenment Movement?The thesis consists of introduction, text and epilogue.The introduction defines the New Enlightenment Movement as it was a thought, cultural, organization and social movement carried out under the slogan of the New Enlightenment Movement in Beijing, Shanghai and Chongqing in the 30-40 years of the 20th century after analyzing the three different understands of connotation of the New Enlightenment Movement, then illustrates the meaning and doctrine of seeing greatness through analyzing small, evaluating the current research situation of the subject and briefs the "two combination" research methods which are the combination of internal and external understanding and internal and external criticism. Both the doctrine of seeing greatness through analyzing small and the two combination research methods are the innovations of the text.The text of the thesis has six chapters, which are divided two sections.The first section which includes three chapters is the study on basic historical facts of the New Enlightenment Movement.The first chapter is on the historical background of the New Enlightenment Movement. The chapter tries to embody the historical background of the New Enlightenment Movement by citing the relevant statement by advocates of the New Enlightenment Movement and attaching importance on analyzing the basic situation of China's political, thought and culture in the 30-40 years of the 20th century whichincludes the party dominating culture policy of the government of the Republic of China, the obscurant education policy of the Manchukuo and the invasion theory of Japanese army, the basic situation of the intelligentsia from the May, 4 movement to the 30 years of the 20th century and the effort to build the united people front of anti-Japanese by the CPC.The second chapter is on the evolutionary course of the New Enlightenment Movement. The chapter reviews the historical course of the New Enlightenment Movement from September, 1936 to July, 1940 with time as a longitude and the works of the participants as latitude. The New Enlightenment Movement prolonged four to five years from start to end. The chapter divides the course as proposition, development and peak, declining and end according to the standard of the intensity of reaction degree of the intelligentsia and analyze the theoretic works of the participants and historical affairs which had big influence.The third chapter is on the thought content of the New Enlightenment Movement. The chapter combed the rationalism, free thought, patriotism outlook and their exploration on the development orientation of Chinese culture of the participants of the New Enlightenment Movement with Mr. Heganzhi's conclusion as a main reference. The chapter pays attention to pursuing the thought tentative of the advocates of the New Enlightenment Movement and inspects the rich thought content of the movement in order to reappear the movement while with less comment.The second section has three chapters too and inspects the New Enlightenment Movement on historical scale with multi-dimension perspective.The fourth chapter is on the Sinofication of Marxism and May, 4 movement.
