| This text looks at the theme of time in the work of Borges. Through analyzing the meditations on time in Borges' three forms of work - poetry, essays and novels– and researching the foundation of Borges' own knowledge, I found that Borges' literary depiction of time as random and ambiguous differed from the more logical and narrow philosophical discussions of the same subject. In order to comprehend Borge's understanding and description of time, it was necessary to analyze the sources from which he himself drew. Borges was an incredibly well read scholar, and in the course of researching this paper, I analyzed numerous philosophical, scientific and religious texts, as well as ancient mythology. While Borges did draw heavily from philosophical views on time, his approach was ultimately a literary one and thus differed from the philosophical perspective. While philosophical understanding of time tended to be abstract and logical, Borge's view was ambiguous, intuitive and often paradoxical. The beauty of his literature was based strongly on the ambiguity of the subject matter, and time was no exception.Borges' thoughts on time are not especially advanced or profound, but it was his decision to approach the study of time from a literary perspective that is of particular interest. |
