Based on a world of translation practice of novels, modern Chinese translation theories are indispensable to the study of modern Chinese translated literature, comparative literature and the history of Chinese literature.Though modern Chinese translation theories are seemingly messy and unsystematic, with the stimulus from the western world they developed tenaciously which influence the orientation of modern Chinese translated literature and literary creation and pave the way for contemporary Chinese translation theories. The academia has made some important progress in the study of modern Chinese translation theories, but we still lack the research from the perspective of Descriptive Translation Studies(DTS).Therefore, with the help from Descriptive Translation Studies, this dissertation is intended to study modern Chinese translation theories in the five different aspects in hopes of gaining new understanding of them. The dissertation is made up of six chapters.Chapter One consists of the review of the related materials published, the theoretical support of this dissertation and the significance of this topic. From Chapter Two to Chapter Six,the paper explores the evolvement of modern Chinese translation theories in different aspects and analyses them from the perspective of Descriptive Translation Studies.Chapter One The Review of the Related Materials and the Significance of the Topic is made up of three sections. In Section One,the related materials published are reviewed in two aspects i.e.the macro research and micro one.Descriptive Translation Theories as the theoretical support are briefly introduced in Section Two.In Section Three, firstly, the paper points out the drawbacks of the related research materials published.Secondly, the significance of the topic is discussed. There are three sections in Chapter Two The Evolvement of the Function Philosophy of Fiction Translation in Modern Times.By listing up the various philosophy held by different translators,Section One and Section Two argue that the development of translation function philosophy in Modern Times consists of the following steps:"Vision Broadening", "Novels as the Soul of Nation","Confusion Resulting from the Linguistic Difference",and "Introduction to Foreign Literary and Artistic Theories".Section Three analyses that evolvement using the Polysystem theory and argues that the changes and development of Translation Function Philosophy in Modern Times means the self-location of translated literature in a cultural system which is seemingly formidable but declining in nature.Chapter Three The Evolvement of Version Selection Philosophy in Modern Times consists of five sections. From Section One to Section Four, the evolvement of version selection philosophy is discussed in four different aspects i.e.novel type, novel grade, novel length, and indirect translation. From the perspective of Toury's Preliminary Norms,Section Five argues that we should not criticize the version selection philosophy in Modern Times statically and the complications that the evolvement experienced reflect that the Preliminary Norms of the translation movement in Modern Times keeps correcting themselves in such a tremendous social change. In Chapter Four The Evolvement of Translation Methodology in Modern Times, there are three sections.Section One and Two describe the phases of the Translation Methodology development i.e."Faithfulness, Smoothness,Elegance","Free Translation Not Word-for-Word One", "the More Faithful, the More Beautiful",and "Deleting at Random Is No Sincerity".In Section Three, based on Lawrence Venuti's Cultural Other theory, this paper argues that the hesitation in Translation Methodology shows the translators in Modern Times were taking great efforts to look for the equilibrium of the two extreme attitudes towards Cultural Other. There are four sections in Chapter Five The Evolvement of Narrative Mode in Translation. From Section One to Section Three, the changes of narrative mode in translation are discussed in three respects i.e. narrative time, narrative perspective and narrative structure. With the help from Andre Lefevere's Rewriting Theory,Section Four holds that the changes of narrative mode in translation are closely connected with cultural rewriting in a speeial historical context which are critical to the development of narratology in China.Chapter Six The Evolvement of Stylistic Philosophy of Translated Version consists of three sections. The first two sections study the style of translated versions in Modern Times in two aspects i.e.language innovation and the introduction to new terms. From the perspective of William Frawley's Third Code Theory,Section Three argues that with the new linguistic elements from western languages the style of translated versions in Modern Times is Third Code that is between colloquial and classic language in the development of modern Chinese language.
