Terminology science is a relatively independent and complex cross-disciplinary subject. It has a "traditional" connection with philosophy, logic, linguistics and psychology, at the same time it is closely related to semiotics, information science, science of science and other subjects. Thus, terminology can be studied from the point of view of the above disciplines. This thesis focuses on analyzing terminology from the perspective of linguistics and terminology science, mainly illustrating the terminological functions in use and many kinds of variation phenomenon.In view of the close relationship between linguistics and terminology science the theory and methodology of linguistics have great impact on terminology. In 1970s, with the appearance and development of functional research methods, a new branch—functional linguistics is formed. It is concerned with the usage of language, with emphasis on explaining the form of language by using linguistic function. These thoughts influence the research of modern terminology science.Terminology is formed on the basis of lexical unit of natural language. The function of lexical unit of natural language and how to realize the function are very important for the research of terminology function. The research method of language function can be applied in analyzing terminology function. In fact, the terminology function has the common features with language function. But terminology has its unique features, namely, a means of denoting concept, so it has notable features. For terminology, important are their cognitive function, heuristic function, instrument function and other functions.It should be emphasized that in reality functioning terms perform their own functions, at the same time many kinds of variation occur. This is affected by the impact of the universal law of language, because variability is the basic characteristics of language. The terminology system, like the language system, is dynamically developing and ever-changing system. Actually, terms exist in terminology system in the form of different variants. Learning the nature and law of terminology variation is important means for setting up their own theories by terminology science. |
