La Messe De Nostre Dame Of Machaut

This dissertation will study La Messe de Nostre Dame by Guilluame de Machaut both in respects of music and the culture, and by this research, the important musical characters and abundant cultural information will be explored, as well as the significance and its embodiments of this milestone work in history of western music. Besides, there will be also the study to the relationship between the music and the culture as well as the music historiography theory and methodology.The dissertation consists of Introduction, Epilogue and four Parts:First Part: The Composer and the Work. Outline of the life and the compositions of Guillaume de Machaut, and the background, manuscripts, modern editions of La Messe.Second Part: Music Analysis. Analyzing the inner structure of the movements of La Messe in the context of Ars Nova style and based this to interpret and understand the work from three points of view.Third Part: Cultural Study. Contact with the general history and composer's own life, explore the cultural elements of the work such as the motive, meaning, and historical environment etc.Fourth Part: Conclusion and Reflection. Estimate the status and the influence of La Messe in music history from the different visions, and discover the relationship between the music and the culture in view of historical philosophy.
