As one of the three masters in the early Qing Dynasty and a principal scholar of the nine in Yitang, Wei Xi is of high prestige in the Qing Dynasty. However, there are few comprehensive and systemetic studies on his literary thoughts in recent years. The dissertation attempts to have an elaberate analysis of Wei Xi's literary thoughts through the detailed studies of his works. With the insight into Wei Xi's life and his social background, the dissertation aims to present Wei Xi's attitudes authentically. After a sincere study of his life career, the dissertation expounds that his family traditions and teenagehood have a profound influence on the formation of his thought. His father's patriotism, unyielding, and wisdom has a positive effect on his life. Besides, Wei Xi's seclusiveness in Peak Cuiwei is a crucial decision, which reveals his survival wisdom in troubled times as well as his speical human qualities. In addition, Chapter One focuses on the spiritual connotation of "Yi" in "Yitang". It is easy to understand the reason why the descendants of the Ming Dyansty worshiped The Yi, and meanwhile the appreciation of The Yi is their worries and concerns for the society, their desires for the progress of the society, and their dynamic and entrepreneurial spirits. Fang Yizhi sang high praise for Yitang, regarding it as unique in the world.Chapter Two is the main body of the dissertation, which is a comprehensive analysis of Wei Xi's literary thoughts. Wei Xi's idea -- all for the society and serving the society—has its temporal characteristics, which is also the core of his literary thoughts. He holds that one can only improve himself by broadening his views and accmulating knowledge, and only by acquiring a better understanding of the truth can it be applied to and serve the society. He stresses doing solid studies and denounces following stereotypes, which is the demand with profound cognition after the reflection as an adherent from the Ming Dynasty to the Qing Dynasty. In the time of national crisis and with the political background that it is impossible to restore the Ming Dynasty, Wei Xi draws a lesson from the destruction of the Ming Dynasty and he realizes that the nation does not belong to a certain person or a cetain family, that the contradiction in his time is not to destroy the Qing Dynasty to restore the Ming Dynasty, that what concerns is how to save the whole nation and deliver the people from their abyss of suffering. Such national consciousness and his ideas to cherish the people are so enlightening that they give rise to Wei Xi's literary thoughts. Besides, his interpretations about the truth, the methods, and the essence are all concerning the fate of the nation and the times of the society, which reveals his thinking and reflection from his bitter experience. Wei Xi's ideas to some extent help promote the development of prose writing in the Qing Dynasty, discard the tendency of imitation in writing, associate closely with the society and reflect truthfully about it.Through the investigations on the humane and natuaral environment in Wei Xi's time, the dissertation demonstrates Wei Xi's temporal spirit and his distinctive characters. The above arguments can not only enrich the studies on Wei Xi, but also provide an essenial way to appreciate Wei Xi's characters, his interests as well as his thoughts.Being an adherent scholar of the early Qing Dyniaty, Wei Xi has its general characters besides his own individuality. Being a scholor in Ningdu, Jiangxi, Weixi's works possess its regional features. Therefore, in Chapter Three, the dissertation summarises it's temporal and regional characteristics so as to embody Wei Xi's features of writings and his thoughts. In Chapter Four, the dissertation has an insight into Wei Xi's literary names as well as his year of death, which is essential to the understanding of a writer. The last chapter also covers Wei Xi's travelling experience, which should not be ignored, for it is an important part in his literary writing and leterary thoughts.
