The works reflecting on societal realities have been appreciated for long due to the customs of the Chinese viewers, art history and social systems. It has never been an easy way for China to go in terms of accepting modern art, which has dominated Europe and North America for nearly a century. However, direct metal sculpture as an expression popular in an art school's research and teaching and as part of modern and abstract art seems to offer possibilities of development for this form of modern art in China at present and in its near future. The paper is intended to explore and study various possibilities of abstract sculpture within an urban space through creativities by direct metal sculpture, and the improvement of basic practice in sculpture department. The research method is focused on exploring the relationship of esthetic laws between this abstract form of construction and some architectural styles, as well as through tracing it historical roots of metal sculpture, its position in modern art, its unique characteristics in form and necessary conditions in this media. A case study relating to teaching metal sculpture at the Central Academy of Fine Arts will be conducted as an example by analyzing the present situations of its development in the fields of creativities, teaching design and public art. Its intention is made to see the liveliness rate of abstract metal sculpture in an urban environment, a unique environment in Chinese cities.Directly using metal materials as an artistic form of sculptural construction restrictively speaking should neither be a mimic of nature nor ornamental. Sculptural work in metal materials has had its own rationale and completeness, its whole process in terms of form, materials and making is closely connected. The construction of form, techniques joint and style are the three key elements of metal sculpture. Its interactive relationship between environment and viewers at time and place is the driving force of its development.China is experiencing an era of rapid development in economy. The requirement to metal sculpture in public art and the needs of urban groupings of people towards art works implying an in-depth aesthetic value in a post modern period have both been increasing. How to undertake teaching by bringing in the foundation courses in modern art as a necessary condition to increase the level of appreciation of abstract art beyond realist art might be of good to improve the face of public art work in an urban space, which is the research topic of this thesis. |
