| This paper mainly discusses the relations between city desire and aesthetics of the contemporary city novels from different periods. From 1950s to 1970s, the politicized desire and depressed esthetics were main character of this period. In this part, the paper mainly discusses four aspects as the following: the country aesthetic experience besieges city desire, the consciousness appearance represses the desire of city people, the strengthen of collective will and the disappearance of individual desire, asexual aesthetics sense and the same worldly wisdom. This was a period when the thought was relatively narrowed and stiffened. The nation designed the city with the planned economy, however, the city economic development resulted in the repression of city desire. In the meantime, the city integrated development, in turn, repressed human personality and human nature. From 1980s to 1990s, it is a period of desire release and aesthetics adjustment. This part mainly discusses four aspects as the following: revelries on material desire and sexual desire, poetic narrative of common customs, aesthetic consideration on modern city life, dialectical interaction between elite thoughts and civilian ideas. The 1980s is a period of desire release and open economy. With the adjustment of city ideas, the original normal things has changed into abnormal ones while the original abnormal things has turned into normal ones now. The 1990s is the age when, under the market economic system, the desire began to expand and the morality began to decay. During this period, some were reasonable while some were not, some were normal while some were abnormal. At the turning of century, it is the period of social transformation and spirit redemption. This part mainly discusses three aspects as the following: spirit struggle in the numerous contradictions, spiritual orientation with no choice, moral decay and aesthetic sense. People faced various spirit perplexities. The city novels at this time mainly described their mental pain and sufferings of city people as well as their struggling process in contradictory, difficult and possible state. At last, the paper discusses some ways to redeem spirit from the following three aspects: the ecosystem balance of city spirit, aesthetic narrative on desire and the spirit redemption of city novels.Based on the above, the paper proposes that seeking ways to redeem city spirit is a growing point for city people to achieve their idealized order. Thousands of people flow into the cities from the countryside, the writer here examines the city desire release from the high level of city spirit, explores the growth from disorder to order, meanwhile, he considers how the spirit of city novels grow in order. He points out that the way to redeem city novels is to reach the balance between high technique and high emotion, competition and equality, emotion change and spirit rules, indifference of human relationship and universal care and love. The paper also views from the relationship between the desire and aesthetics of city novels, mainly examines the phenomenon of spirit fault of contemporary city novels. Under the tendency of consumerism, city novels lay particular emphasis on pure desire, lack of responsibility and moral consciousness. The perplexities on value diversity, value fault, cultural consciousness and evaluation standard lead to the imperfection of novels spirit and loss of aesthetics. In the end, the paper further explores the deep problems of the novel: the human's all-around development, value orientation on truth, kindness and beauty (moral consciousness etc.), acquisition of critical spirits (concern for the ordinary people, social problem and contradiction of the city ) etc.. The paper tries to analyze objectively and evaluate aesthetically the desire and spirits of city novels, ponders stereoscopically on how to develop the novels of the new century and to redeem its spirit.
