The research object of the thesis is the stage of modern drama from the early phase that it began to disseminate into China to middle 1930's.Chinese traditional opera which plays a story with the song and the dance , is a kind of virtual manifestation , while western modern drama plays it with the actor's lines and the action that approach the living appearance , which pays attention to the imitation of the realistic life . Chinese traditional opera and the modern drama present entirely different aesthetic judgment and their management operation mechanism and society existence fashion are as well not same. In the circumstance of modernization , the traditional opera was see as the thing of the old ages , the object to be eliminated , while modern drama acquired such unusual honor as progress , revolution , future drama development direction , becoming the sample of Chinese opera's modernization.Modern drama stared to disseminate into China since the end of 19 century, experiencing countless difficulties and obstacles, relatively mature pattern of stage was built up in middle 1930's. As a principle concept, realism produced profound influence in this course and became its direction . Emphasizing on the core concept of realism , this thesis try to discuss the stage set, the relation between the stage and the audience , the performance , and the society existence of modern drama .In early days , realism was used to summarize the character of modern drama , also to make the distinction between modern drama and Chinese opera , which is characterized by vivid expression and bold outline . But as Chinese understood about it thoroughly and also because circumstance in that time limited , realism became a concrete concept gradually.
