An outer perspective is essential on condition that a publication's status, significance and historiography value in the whole literature structure is studied. The literature trend of thought can be regarded as an outer perspective in periodical research. This dissertation studies the journal Les Contemporans in terms of literature trend of thought. Also its status and significance in the literature structure in 1930s are explored from the angle of its imbroglio relationship with the literature trend of thought of that time, with the relationship between the periodical and the literature trend of thought as well as the function and significance of the periodical in the literature trend of thought as focus of attention.The close link between the publication and the contemporary literature trend of thought is vital to the integral survey of the publication, especially to the 1930s' periodical Les Contemporans, whose focus was just the rising global literature trend of thought encircled. In 1930s, the Left Wing and modernism were two main influencing literature trend of thought. From the main contents and writers of Les Contemporans, it was obvious that modernism and the Left Wing had indiscerptible relation from the introduction time of modernism. Les Contemporans oriented on the theoretical construction and literature production of the two literature trend of thought from its beginning. So the complicated and subtle relationship between the two thoughts is key to our interpretation of the sensational periodical.This dissertation employs the writing pattern as conception-phenomena-case. The body part is divided into four chapters that contribute to dissertating the relationship between Les Contemporans and the literature trend of thought of its time.Chapter one starts with the Trackless Train and the New Literature, which appeared before Les Contemporans, examining the tendency and changes of their writers. The two periodicals formed stable foundation for Shi Zhe-cun in terms of creation and publication. Shi Zhecun and his fellows devoted to the introducing of the world new literature trend of thought, which focused on the trend that cater for their desires after World War I. The relationship between the periodicals Trackless Train and the New Literature and the Left Wing was dominant while with modernism it was relatively recessive. The entrepreneurs'attitude towards the two literature trend was not entirely different. They regard them as modern, pioneering and avant-garde, and then they followed and imitated them. The content arrangement and periodical style of them came down in one continuous line. Influenced by proletarian art theory of Feng Xue-feng, Trackless Train mainly published the art theory of former Russia. In a whole, the publishers whose own theory was not yet formed were on their way of acceptation and assimilation. They mostly created and translated literature works with dense Left Wing tinct. The most noticeable feature of New Literature was federalization. Therefore Shi Zhe-cun and his fellow's productions were closely linked to the world literature trend. The same was true for the turning of New Literature. Shi Zhecun affiliated with many helpful young writers and reinforced his power of influence in the field of literature. What's more, the editorial style change of and Trackless Train and New Literature was just the reflection of Shi Zhecun's gradual change in literature notion.Trackless Train and New Literature served as the starting point for Shi Zhe-cun as well as for Les Contemporans. Shi Zhe-cun and his fellows set up an ideology-spreading environment. They selectively introduced the progressive ideology that could accelerate the building of our country's new literature. During this selecting and transplanting course, the theory was creatively transformed by their continuous experimentation and reproduction.Chapter two states the relationship between Les Contemporans and the Left Wing ideology in 1930s. The Left Wing ideology was one of the most important branches in the international advanced literature trend at that time. Les Contemporans made a record of China's new literature trend and caters for the emotions of the readers and the writers by means of publishing versions and productions of the Left Wing literature. In the process of numerous and complicated literature thesis translating Chinese Left Wing literature trend of thought at first tried to look for an unify theory as leading thought by translating. The literature essay New Romanticism, translated by Shi Zhe-cun, represented the editors' attitudes towards the prevailing Left Wing literature. It was also a doctrinal study and recognition of the literature ideology. The Left Wing was romantic in nature though it was politically and literally radical.Russia was the source of Left-Wwing literature trend of thought.Japanese Left Wing literature primarily imitated Russia's Left Wing literature road.However,theory field od China intruduced Russia's Left Wing theory from Japan at large quantity,so, the Russia's Left Wing literature trend of thought affecting Japan affected Chinese Left Wing literature thoery field.The change was from doctrinal discussion to persistent left turning. The translation of Japanese novels was more than that of art theories in Les Contemporans because the editors think little of Japanese Left Wing literature ideology. In contrast, the Les Contemporans enjoyed Japanese proletarian novels that had published.The novels they translated reflected the revolution conflict liking a raging fire with the lateral depiction and delicate mental states. Such as, the psychology depiction that father was concerned about and sustained his son who took part in revolution in Romantic, the psychology depiction that one woman worried about her husband's life in Round Cake. In Japanese proletarian of Les Contemporans novels characters that attended revolution all did not appear,but refracted their being engaged in dangerous but lofty revolution activity with lateral depiction.Although under the influence of Russia literatures Chinese and Japanese proletarian literatures developed dynamically, literature theories of China and Janpanese came over from the Soviets proletarian theories for along time. Chinese literature theories from Janpanese were the foreign goods in the foreign goods only.The magazine paid attention to translating Soviet Russia literature theories.Qu Qiu-bai's Marx , Engels and Realism in Literature had very important significance in Chinese translating literature theories of Marx , Engels. The nomenclature of socialistic realism appeared for the first time in China at Les Contemporans magazine up. The Les Contemporans magazine intuouduced a new literature stype—Reportage form that appeared in Soviet Russia Left Wing literature. Du Heng was a writer, an editor and a theorist. He was a complicated existence doubtless. Du Heng's creating and the literature contestation he participate in bore the weight of the complicated existence form of Chinese Left Wing literature trend in 1930s.Chapter three discusses the relation between Modernism literature trend and Les Contemporans. The reason that Modernism literature trend is valued by Chinese writers is that Modernism literature trend agreed with h their chase to world trend. When they introduced the western modernism literature trend the editors and writers in Trackless Train, New Literature and Les Contemporans translated and created. The Les Contemporans magazine mostly translated stream of consciousness novels of the United States, Japanese novels of the new-senses and France psychological novels . This tendency didn't come into being unconsciously. We can analyse this phenomenon from the connection between editors,translators and three types of novels in Les Contemporans magazine. The editor in chief of Les Contemporans magazine liked the psychoanalysis novels that can scoop out the self-awareness. There were common points among stream of consciousness novels of the United States, Japanese novels of the new-senses and France psychological novels. These novels paid attention to the inside consciousness and took the mental activity of the characters as the main body of novels. The editor and translators of Les Contemporans were agreed with translating objects.This kind of agreement made Les Contemporans present a modernism style whole. It was a kind of outcome of city that the Left Wing literature trend and the Left Wing experiences radically, is all a kind of modern experience, have the close contact with modernism.The relation between them was a kind of symbiosis and coexistence with modernism. Mu Shiying's creating experience can explain that once the modernism literature trend was translated into China it had the relation of the indivisibility with the Left Wing literature trend in 30's literature trends. Mu Shiying shew his pursue to modernism literature trend faced with the powerful Left Wing literature trend.During his new form investigation he shew tension and hesitation faced with two kinds of entirely different literature trends in China. However, this kind of tension and hesitation was representative self-contradict psychology when writers created at that time.Chapter four focuses on the editor of les Contemporans and analyses ulteriorly the translation theories, translating members, the translation path and Shi Zhecun's editting principle and his creating. Translation is the way of a literature choice. The way to create by translation is a process of choice and accepting. This kind of choice and accepting in reverse affects writer's creating directly. Thus, this kind of influence is bidirectional interactive process. Shi Zhecun, Liu Naou and Dai Wangshu translated for the sake of seeking advanced literature creating form in popular between two kinds of different cultures. By literature translation, they introduced this kind of new trend into China and hoped to infused fresh bloods for the construction of the Chinese modern literature. In 1920's and 1930's literature trends,such as the Left Wing literature trend of thought spreading Russia and Modernism trend prevailing in Europe and America, they were all regarded as vanward and advanced literature trend of thoughts. Literature translation about Modernism was a kind of way to select and accept foreign literature. This way influenced writers in Les Contemporans.Concerned with whole editing attitude, Shi Zhecun abandoned "light" and choosed "heavy", following out "Thickhead" policy.Faced with the business challenge Shi Zhecun didn't pursue the amusement interest of public in edit,however,he paid attention to the ponderance of literatures,namely,his "heavy" literature.Les Contemporans magazine did not prepare to result any trend or any school.The editor's creating tendency did not represent the magzine edit style .Shi Zhecun'creating way also reflected the conglutination of two literature trends in 1930s.Novels, such as Kumarajiva and Auto road ,can distinguish "Left Wing" or "Modernism" on theme, but they just right made use of psychoanalysis that Shi Zhecun was good at. Hereon, the literature had already surmounted the politics.Conclusion: The Les Contemporans magazine had very high jumping-off point. It regarded itself as one member in the world literature context and could exquisitely catch the popular thing of literature circles of the world,combining together with literature creating practice of China. Thus, speaking up from this meaning, Les Contemporans was a Modernist publication and its writers were "Modernist" at that time.
