Fuguan Hermeneutics Thought

Hsu Fu-kuan tudied the art history from the history of thought and put forward the hermeneutic thought of "pursue experience" interpreting Chinese art history and literature history. He fused the study of Chinese art history, literature history and thought history. In his opinion, literature and art are a component of Chinese thought. The features of Chinese thought formulate the core of Chinese art and literature. His interpretation of Chinese art and literature is combined with the interpretation of Chinese thought. According to him, the hermeneutic method of "pursue experience"must be applied in interpreting Chinese thought and art.Hsu Fu-kuan's hermeneutic thought was formed when Chinese thought and culture were under the impact of modernity. Xu Fuguan holds that it is the requirement of Chinese cultural consciousness to interpret Chinese thought conforming to her own significance and to rediscover the original Chinese thought shadowed by the influence of modern western culture. Hsu Fu-kuan insists on the principle that the original meaning of the ancient people should dominant our understanding of the ancient thought. The modern interpretation of Chinese thought should aim at pursuing the primeval significance (original meaning) in modern language without losing it. The purpose of interpreting the tradition is to understand the ancient people as their own. When Chinese thought and art are interpreted and restated in the historical structure of modernity, new understanding occurs to the thought and art in this process, hence new significance is produced in the tradition itself. The new significance is the possible meaning released from the interpretation space of the Chinese thought itself rather than the interpretation beyond the primeval thought. The new meaning doesn't overthrow the principle of primeval significance. It is more like the surge of primeval thought and the living situation of modern people, the echo of the distant spirit in present. In terms of Chinese literature and art, Hsu Fu-kuan emphasizes on interpreting the history from the history itself, interpreting Chinese literature within the system of Chinese art and literature theory, so as to gain the primeval significance of Chinese literature.The texture research and the explanations of words in ancient books, a very important research method in Chinese traditional learning, same as the western hermeneutics, is the main resource of modern Chinese hermeneutics.
