This dissertation examines J. M. Coetzee's oeuvre, both fictional writings and non-fictional writings, as a form of "grand narrative" in a frame of postcolonial context, with an aim to reconstruct Coetzee's Diaspora perspective in his writing. The dissertation argues that it is by the menthod of transcendental otherness, that Coetzee writes his novels, and if this sort of readership is accepted, readers will find that Coetzee's writings, by looking inward and reaching ourtward, can greatly extend their understanding of the postcolonial world.The introduction of this dissertation presents an argumentation that J. M. Coetzee is not only a great writer, or a Nobel Prize winner for literature, but also a great postcolonial theorist, as important as Edward Said, Spivak or Homi Bhabha. It also gives an explanation about the reason of studying J. M.
