The "May 4th Movement" and the "New Culture Movement" molded a new paradigmfor Chinese culture by using westem culture to save Chinese culture. Modern paintingalso developed in China through this paradigm. This paradigm would normally bringabout progress in modern painting. However, 100 years have already passed and China'smodern art has stirred up a lot of problems. Thus, the paradigm must be continuouslyqueried. In the process of the modernization of painting, "realism" appeared on the artistic stagein China. Since the middle ofthe 20th century, realism has been an overwhelming trend inChinese painting, but it hasn't resolved the problem of Chinese painting. On the contrary,Chinese painting has taken off gradually because the way one looks at the world haschanged. With the development of "globalization", the problem of national identitybegan to emerge in international cultural communication. Issues such as what should bepreserved and what should be blended have become rigorous problems in the age ofglobalization. How to think about cultural identity and the value of nationalism will be theimportant thing in culture. This paper discusses the influence of "modernity" in painting circles in the more than100 years since the May 4th Movement and stands on a historical platform with a kindof objective and historical attitude. This paper will be helpful towards objectively under-standing Chinese painting since the 20th century through paying attention to the how theparadigm changes has been reflected in painting and through researching in depth themeanings of what lies between traditional and modern, progressive and backward, etc.
