Metacognition And Interlinkage In Speech

Interlinkage is a common phenomenon in oral-language, but there have been not any accepted name for it yet. Metacognition impenetrate in the whole process of interactive discourse is the evidence for its existence. As a parallel thinking process to cognition manifested by language, metacognition is forced to be interlinkaged within the restriction of interactive discourse's time-linearity. Interlinkage is the outcome of metacognition whose essence is the self-monitoring of one self's speech. This kind of self- monitoring is based on the speakers' language sense and intercommunicating knowledge, and it will launch with the assistance of intercommunicate experience.This thesis consists of three main parts with eight chapters. The first part includes three chapters, which aim at constructing the concept of Interlinkage, and analyzing metacognition theory; the second part starts from chapter four to chapter six, which conduct deep analysis of different kinds of Interlinkage ; and the last part is the analysis of the distribution of the Interlinkage .The content of each chapter is as follows:Chapter One: Introduction.The first chapter introduces the context of the research and the significance of the thesis, and explains theories and methods used in the research. It also shows the framework and main contents, some issues for further consideration and reference materials of the thesis..Chapter Two: The Construction of the Concept of Interlinkage: From metacognition to discourse structure.In this chapter, theories of functionalism and research methods are discussed. A thorough exposition about the necessary of cognitive and metacognitive studies on interactive discourse is made. Then a tempt is made to seek the new cognizance of the openness of metacognition and the dialogue-nature of language activity.Chapter Three: Interlinkage: The Formalization of Metacognition.This is the key part of this thesis. In this chapter, the reasoning on essence, sort, subordinate types and circulative rules of metacognition is made. In the meantime, Interlinkage is proved to be the result of metacognition.Consequently, a speaker's self-monitoring to his own discourse can be observed and analyzed by the Interlinkages he makes.Chapter Four: The Language Level of Interlinkage.In this chapter, the language level of Interlinkage, including beginning-node, chain, and linked-node is depicted particularly. These parts are also carriers of Interlinkage's characteristics.Chapter Five: Types of Interlinkage.This chapter mainly studies all kinds of Interlinkage, who has lots of subordinate types, such as Text Interlinkage, Metatext Interlinkage and Insert Interlinkage.The function of metacognition and the process of its running can be observed clearly by analyzing the formative cause, structure and function of these types of Interlinkage.Chapter Six: Text Function of Interlinkage.This chapter mainly studies the text function of Interlinkage.Owing to the existing of Interlinkage, interactive discourse can be regarded as a solid structure with multilayer. It provides new ideas for text analysis and comprehending. Using Interlinkage in discourse is also initiative rhetoric.Chapter Seven: Summary.The last chapter summarizes the views and conclusions of the thesis, and some issues that need further consideration is also presented.The main achievements in this dissertation are as follows:1. It discloses the background of metacognition during the process of interactive discourse, and points out that the openness of metacognition and the dialogue-nature of language activity are the main properties that influence the form of natural discourse.2. It makes a research on the mechanism and representation of metacognition activities: there are four directions in metacognition. It keeps self-monitoring the speakers' speech-planning with two kinds of monitor-depth-of-field.3. It puts forwards the new conception on Interlinkage. Only with this conception, nature discourse can be explained as hyper text.4. It analyzes the characters and structures of all kinds of Interlinkages in details, which tells us how metacognition can be integrated into language structure.5. It elucidates text function of Interlinkage. This reveals that the interactive discourse is exactly a solid structure with multilayer.There are some deficiencies in this dissertation. For instance, some language phenomenon still needs the Psycholinguistic validating; the teaching value of "metacognition and Interlinkage" have not been deployed; the analysis of some kind of sub- Interlinkage is still crude, etc. Therefore, a further study needs to be conveyed in the future.
