Notes On The Words In Qianfulun

The dissertation makes a research into 130 words in Qianfulun (《潛夫論》) . With Wang Jipei and Peng Duo's Qianfulun Jian Jiaozheng (《潛夫論箋校正》) as its object of study, at the same time, with the variants in different editions under consideration, the dissertation resorts to the comprehensive use of the theory of linguistics concerning paleography, lexicology, grammar and phonology of ancient Chinese, the theory of critical interpretation of ancient texts, and the research means of edition and collation in the study of ancient books. The errors in Wang Jipei and Peng Duo's notations are corrected. The problems and their solutions include notes by the way of tracing out the evolving routes from original meaning to extended meaning in the word meanings system; having a correct understanding of synonymous compounds; notes by making use of the rhetorical features of different words with same meaning and parallelism; pointing out the problem of non-wrong-word in Wang Jipei and Peng Duo's notations; pointing out the problem of non-borrowing-word in Wang Jipei and Peng Duo's notations; pointing out the problem of the incorrect selection of variants; the peculiar usage of some function words; the problem of incorrect citations; the problem of the wrong usage of punctuation marks; the problem of shengxun (the method to explain the meaning of a word by the word with the same or similar sound); and the problems in A Large-sized Chinese Dictionary dealing with the words in Qianfulun: incorrect notation, failure to make some meaning entry, failure to make word entry, and late citation.
