This dissertation deals with the topic of Hong Kong TV play series on cultural studies. With the overall frame of "Representation-Image-Ideology", the dissertation offers an analysis and interpretation of the symbol of binary modes of characters, the image of existing circumstances and the vision of Hong Kong in Hong Kong TV play series from the end of 1970s. And it tries to feature out the historical context behind audio-visual symbols, as well as the relationship between them.There are four chapters of the dissertation. The Chapter One discusses the development of cultural studies theories, of Hong Kong TV industry and TV series, the thoerical topics of the dissertation included also. Chapter Two is devoted to the symbols of binary modes of characters in Hong Kong TV play series with the angel of representation. Chapter Three is for the existing circumstances with the angel of iamge. Chapter Four is for the vision of Hong Kong behind these TV play series with the angel of ideology, including the consciousness, the identity and the border of Hong Kong city. The Conclussion, the overall characteristics of Hong Kong TV play series.The details as follows:1) The narrative content of Hong Kong TV play series is "the story of existence of Hong Kong people"-that is to say- the description and choices of existence.2) The relationship between Hong Kong TV play series and concret historical context is very tight but less interference from the factor of politics.3) As the production of cultural industry, the characteristics of Hong Kong TV play series are consumption and reprodution.
