The Five Dynasties and Ten States Period is the continuity of the Late Tang Dynasty and the beginning of North Song Dynasty. It is a transitional period between the Tang and Song Dynasties which enjoy the high prosperous development of Literature. In Chinese history the unity is the main trend of the historical development, although there are some separated states occasionally. The Five Dynasties and Ten States period is the divided historical period, therefore, the literature of this age is comparatively backward. However, the literature of the Former and the Later Shu Period is quite prosperous during this age.From the angle of the time, the literature of the Former and the Later Shu is the literature in the Period of the cultural transformation, because it is in the special historical period between the Tang Dynasty and the song Dynasty. From the angle of the region, the Former and Later Shu ruled the BaShu area, so its literature had the characteristic of the BaShu region. Therefore, the literature of Former and Later Shu is a kind of literature type in the special historical period and special region.Based upon the background provided, this thesis is going to deal with the following aspects.The Introduction is to discuss the significance and value of the research on this topic, and also introduce the present achievement of the study as well as the approach to it. It is pondered that the academia has paid some sporadic attention tothe research of the literature of the Former and Later Shu, but it was just the discussion about the very few writers and their work. The present study is not completely and systematically. So it is necessary to study it comprehensively. As to the approach, the textual research and description are widely used.Chapter one: Historical and Cultural Background of the literature of the Former and Later Shu. Firstly, the Chapter makes a brief introduction of the history of the Former and Later Shu. Secondly, it discusses the changeable process of the writers' fate and mentality. Thirdly, it is held that the Bashu local culture had an influence on the literature of the Former and Later Shu. Finally, it makes a conclusion that the ruling class of the Former and Later Shu attached great importance to the culture.Chapter two: The research on the writers of the Former and Later Shu. The chapter makes a study on some important writers of this period. Such as TangQiu, LuYanRang, FengJuan, ZhuangDuGu, OuYangBin, Monk KePeng, WangRenYu, DuGuangTing, ZhangBin. The thesis examines thoroughly about their life story, experience in Shu.Chapter three: The research on the works of the Former and Later Shu. Divided into four parts: Jin, Shi, Zi, Ji, the chapter makes a comprehensive research on the works of this period.Chapter four: The research on the poem and Ci of the Former and Later Shu. As to the poem, the thesis thinks that there were many poets during the Former and Later Shu, including local poets and the poets from other parts of the nation, and some royal family members. The content of the poem was very rich and varied. Such as the description of troubled times, the dream of peaceful and flourishing age; the chant of historical events, the parabolic and allegorical expression about the current affairs.As to the Ci, Firstly, the thesis mainly deals with the development of Xi Shu Ci (the Ci poem of the Former and Later Shu). Secondly, the thesis introduces the content of Xi Shu Ci comprehensively. Finally, it probes into its value and important status in the literature history.Chapter five: The Research on the essay of the Former and Later Shu. The thesis divides it in to three groups: the essay of memorial, the essay of argument and the essay of literature theory. The thesis analyses some important writers' works and draw a conclusion that there was some achievement in the essay writing of the Former and Later Shu.Chapter six: The Research on the fiction of the Former and Later Shu. There are some achievements of the fiction works in this period. HeGuangYuan, JingHuan, DuGuangTing, JinLiYong are the famous fiction writers. The anecdote fiction and miraculous fiction are both have excellent masterworks.In short, the literature of the Former and Later Shu is the comparative prosperous local literature, under the separated circumstance. It continued the prosperity of the literature of the Tang Dynasty in BaShu area, and promoted the flourishing of the BaShu culture in the Song Dynasty. It has the important Status in Chinese literature history.
