Study On Sino-US Military Cooperation During The Anti-Japanese War (1937-1945)

It is the attempt of this essay to study the conflicts and coordination of the Sino-US military alliance through analyzing its formation and development, whereby a more learned perception of Sino-US relationship and its influence in this period could be obtained.Chinese anti-Japanese war is not conducted in isolation, it is an indivisible part of world anti-fascism war, and also the victory of Chinese anti-Japanese war is inseparable from the support of the people all over the world. The establishment of Sino-US military alliance plays a very important role not only to the victory of the Chinese anti-Japanese war, but also to the victory of anti fascism, which has a significant influence to the development of Sino-US relations after World War Two.The Sino-US military relation, compared with political and economic ones, shows more direct and striking features. One of the real purposes of bilateral cooperation is to defeat Japanese, to win the battle of anti-fascism. This is the most fundamental convergence for the bilateral interests, and is also the foundation and drive of forming the bilateral relations. Sino-US military cooperation is an important symbolic tie that underpinned the bilateral relations as well as the core aspect of the interaction between the two countries during this special period. The significance of military cooperation between the two countries in the time of anti-Japanese war is not limited to jointly fighting against Japanese fascists during the wartime but lies much more in its influence of postwar geopolitics.The bilateral military cooperation started with July 7th incident in 1937, ended in 1945 when Japanese surrendered. The military cooperation in this period, which was mutually beneficial with both countries benefiting from it, greatly promoted the victory of world anti-fascism war. With respect of China, military cooperation with the US enhanced the strength and confidence in battling against Japanese, fortified international status of China as a major power during and after the war, and played a very positive role in achieving final victory over Japan. With respect of US, China tied down themajority of Japanese ground troop, which effectively supported US military action in the Pacific region, enabling the realization of "first Europe and then Asia" strategy. China communist party's military cooperation with the US is an important part of Sino-US military cooperation in this period. Towards the end of Japanese war, the US adopted a policy of supporting Jiang regime in contending the communist, which to some extent cemented Jiang's dictatorship in China, and resulted in protracted standoff between China and US in the wake of establishment of new China, to which, communist party of China held rational, powerful and limited struggle, firmly protecting the fundamental interests of Chinese people.The American attitude varied with the change of the American strategic interests as well as the battle situation in World War Two. When America considered China as a major contributor in battling against Japanese in the Pacific war, the degree of bilateral cooperation was raised, and vice versus. After the breakout of Sino-Japanese war, the Chinese government made every effort in obtaining US support, but America watched before they involved. In the early period of the Pacific war, the US regarded China as the first line of defense in resisting the Japanese and future base for launching counter attack against Japan. Sino-US military cooperation during this period was carried out , relatively smoothly in spite of the discord and disagreement. After 1943, America gradually gained command of the Pacific war and started island jumping combat. Especially after completion of the US military plan in defeating Japan, the discord and disagreement and friction in the course of Sino-US military cooperation was intensified to the degree of endangering the bilateral relationship.
