The development of Korean modern and contemporary painting has been influenced mainly by two factors: traditional Korean painting and Western painting. After contacted with Western culture, Korean painting faces the issue of collision and integration. This is the key to the future Korean art Based on specific historical and cultural condition of Korean painting in the twentieth century, and Eastern Asian art background, especially Chinese and Japanese art history as reference, this thesis aims to clarify the development of Korean modern and contemporary painting. This research would helpfully further promote Korean art.In view of collision and integration of Korean art, we learn from two angles. First, under developing historical circumstance, the influence of Eastern Asian and Western art has on Korean modern painting, which accurately and integrally comprehends Korean modern painting's alterations. Second, to study how Western Modern Art cultivates Korean modern painting, we would analyze some documentary and pictorial objects to evaluate similarity and difference between Chinese and Korean Modern art Furthermore, we would discuss collision and integration problem that Korean Modern Art faces.The introduction section describes the purpose in writing this research and its related information. First chapter explains, during eighteenth to twentieth century how Western painting spreading into China and Japan that resulted in significant changes. Second Chapter emphasizes how techniques, theories, and overall characteristics and styles influenced Korean traditional art development after Western painting was introduced in Korea. Third chapter shows Korea enter an era that contemporary Korean art directly communicates with Western art Because of the culture difference between west and east, nude painting has brought great dispute. Due to this topic, a brief comment about nude painting development in China, Japan and Korea was discussed. Within Chapter Four, it is mentioned that Korean contemporary painting has already been influenced enormously by Westernized Japan's academic painting during Japan-dominated period. In fact, according to Japan's "Culture Policy", early Korean art pedagogy and its developing style is to imitate contemporary Japan's. Chapter Five points out how some Korean artists consistently investigate and creatively search an endemism tendency, which assisted Korean modern and contemporary painting established . Chapter Six outlines Korean art before liberation. Chapter Seven points out how Western Modern Art collides with Korean modern and contemporary painting. By experiencing corporeal and conceptual collision, Korean modern and contemporary painting defines its own new concept Chapter Eight refers about Korean modern and contemporary painting in identifying its position in modern and contemporary art through studying of native art In the last chapter - nationalization and globalization, it shows how Korean modern and contemporary painting expresses its nation's culture. It also reflects as a modernized folk art and modern art realism that leads to a new art status quo. Furthermore, many overseas Korean artists, such as Go Am Ung-no Lee and Nam-June Paik introduced Korean modern and contemporary painting to the world and built up national confidence.Overall, since the eighteenth century, development, alteration and beginning of Korean Modern and contemporary painting relate to westernized China art, with their connected territory andfrequent culture exchanges, western art was quickly introduced into Korea from China and had a great impact on traditional Korean art This improved traditional Korean art from style, technique and thought After Meiji restoration, Japan characterizes art education and its activities at all aspects. Whereas Japanese westernized art domination of Korean's, it stimulated Korean artists to evaluate the beauty of their national art As a result, it strengthened the importance to make Korean art endemically.
