| It is claimed in this thesis that language expression pattern is an important component of language culture. On the basis of this understanding, the author carries out a preliminary research on the antithetical couplet, a language expression pattern with national characteristics, from the perspective of cultural linguistics. In this research, the author mainly applies the concerning theories and methods on cultural linguistics and widely draws on the research findings of predecessors and the wise today. The case study on the antithetical couplet helps to clarify that there are similarities between language culture and culture as a whole. The language expression pattern and speech style of a nation have a thousand and one links to the nation's ideology, aesthetic tradition, customs and the overall characteristics of the language itself. Language culture is in itself systematic and has its own specific characteristics. At the same time, it is also as changeable and diverse as the other cultures and has its own rules. As a kind of speech pattern, the popularity of antithetical couplet in China has its profound reasons. On the other hand, it can embody the Chinese traditional culture to a large extent.This thesis consists of 10 chapters, divided into 7 parts.Part I (Chapter 1) mainly introduces the main clue, theoretical background and academic research value, etc. Firstly, the author defines the speech pattern as a concept in language culture. This introduces the author's understanding on the language culture, cultural linguistics and blending theory which lay the basis of the whole thesis. Then the author discusses the phenomena of antithetical couplet andprevious researches on it. Finally, he discusses the meaning of research on antithetical couplet from the perspective of cultural linguistics.Part II (Chapter 2) mainly explores the nature of antithetical couplet and emphasizes antithetical couplet is a speech pattern in language culture. The author firstly introduces the name and the reality of antithetical couplet, i.e. its connotation and denotation. The following discussion is on the development characteristics and functions of antithetical couplet. Finally he discusses the nature of antithetical couplet.Part III (Chapter 3) demonstrates that antithetical couplet is the result of adapting to two contexts from the cultural theory of specific context. The author firstly proves that antithetical couplet is a result of adapting to the context of Chinese characteristics and then it is also a result of adapting to the context of antithesis.Part IV (Chapter 4, 5, 6) introduces that symmetry, as a kind of language expression culture, has 3 conspicuous features: symmetrical expression, brief expression and poetic expression. Symmetrical expression is the fundamental feature. Brief expression is another basic feature. Poetic expression is of far-reaching significance. Since the original form of Chinese poetry is symmetrical, the symmetrical expression, as the fundamental feature of antithetical couplet, virtually reflects Chinese poetic expression culture. All these 3 conspicuous features of antithetical couplet have been deeply rooted in the soil of the national culture. They embody the symmetrical expression culture, brief expression culture and poetic expression culture of China in a varied andtypical way.Part V (Chapter 7) takes Spring Festival couplets, inscription couplets and entertaining couplets as examples to illustrate that antithetical couplet is a phenomenon in custom and culture, which proves the degree of depth of culture in antithetical couplet. The authors claims that antithetical couplet has become a kind of important carrier and an important component of Chinese festivals, inscriptions and word games. Antithetical couplet has entered Chinese people's daily life, therefore, it can be taken a kind of Chinese folk custom.Part V!
