Until recently, studies of Lu-xun and relevant materials yielded Lu-xunxue ,just as Hongluomeng developed Hongxue reflective of the accomplishments by Lu-xun studies. Studies of 《Gushixinbian》 ,however, have yet to ripe adequate results. Among the pertinent reasons, lopsided interest of a large number of scholars and researchers in the humorous elements of work, giving rise to an eccentric understanding of 《Gushixinbian》 as a satire, may be considered. Secondly, failure of many researchers to recognize inherent relations between Lu-xun and 《Gushixinbian》 resulted in another failure to explicate the causality of how Lu-xun had developed 《Gushixinbian》,Studies of 《Gushixinbian》 therefore remain only to the extent of individual interpretation of work, rather than one that is comprehensive,or detailed, inherent, and systematic. Comprised of introduction, four chapters and a conclusion, this thesis begins its discussion from the mythology perspective to interpret motives and spiritual realm of 《Gushixinbian》 together with its artistic components in a systematic and detailed fashion.Introduction Based upon a systematic mythological study of 《Gushixinbian》,this thesis interprets specific contents and artistic properties of this novel, briefly identifying a magnified view of the creative ideology of Lu-xun and explaining the purpose of this study. To this end, background for this systematic study of 《Gushixinbian》 has been described based upon a systematic mythological study..Chapter 1. Mythology and Lu-xunIn this Chapter, narrow and wide constructions of mythology are explained, after which the initial work on Lu-xun of 《Po' eshenglun》is involved in a review of transition from 《Zhongguoxiaoshuoshilue》 of the 1920s to the vulgar literature of the final year, while speculating under what spirit of creation and attitude Lu-xun wrote 《Gushixinbian》.Chapter 2. Pioneering the New WorldIn this Chapter, efforts were made to understand historical study of《Gushixinbian》 and its results from the creative writing and trend of literature perspectives in a systematic manner. To that end,the former is again classified into historical novel, new history novel, vulgar literature, old events novel, horror novel, and mythological novel, whereas the latter is classified into realism, romanticism and modernism perspectives subject to the subsequent inquiries of how the studies have affected the study of 《Gushixinbian》 .Chapter 3. Pursuing the New WorldIn this Chapter, the entire work of 《Gushixinbian》 and its origination background areconsolidated,so as to define the motive of creating work and its mythological world.7First,affirmation of women values and implicit criticisms of traditional male dominated culture are reviewed, while the study of 《Butian》 indicates that Nuwa figure represents individuality and criticism, and creativity of 5.4 period. Furthermore, construction of a deific world and structural deficiencies resulting thereunder against the figure of Nuwa reviving the moments of the success and failure of 5.4 movement, are described to be symbolic of the 5.4 spirit. Psychological state toward individual ideals, nihilistic thoughts and vengeful minds were studied through traces of the age of enlightenment discovered in 《Benyue》 and 《Zhujian》,within which psychology and survival experienced by Lu-xun and the educated class of the time are mirrored into. Meanwhile, positive state of mind held by Lu-xun toward the Chinese narrow culture is inquired into. Studying 《Lishui》,《Caiwei》,《Chuguan》,《Feigong》,《Qisi》 and other works yielded an understanding that the educated Chinese value the tradition of success in life. Yu and Mo-ziare spiritual personalities existent hi the minds of Lu-xun,and Lu-xun attempted to sacrifice perplexities and doubts in life, pain and sufferings and even optimistic view of life, for he represented the spirit of his civilization.
