Cantonese represents Guangdong dialects, and is rich in utterance particles. In view of the knowledge that the sentence predication is the essential embodiment of the language communication function, this dissertation emphasizes the effects on the sentence predication of the Cantonese utterance particles at the end of the sentence.l.The basic function of the Cantonese final particles is assisting the intonation to convey moods. Through the observations on the distribution of the utterance particles, some of the utterance particles distributed at the end of the yes-no question take decisively distinctive effect on the moods; and they are in complementary distribution with the final particles which are not at the end of the interrogative sentence. All the final particles convey modal moods, communicate complicated subjective attitudes or feelings.2. The Cantonese final particles are effective in conveying the semantic meaning,forming the complete sentence and the distinctive sentence pattern.3. The Cantonese final particles also play distinctive roles in information transmission. The final particles could help fix the information focus of the sentence. Sometimes because of the emergence of the final particles, the new information with the focus could be omitted, and forms a sentence with implication. This dissertation delineates the causes and requirements of the phenomenon. The consecutive use of the final particles relates to the focus expression.Although the exposition of this dissertation is on the Cantonese final particles, but the selecting angles, ways and conclusions have high theoretical value on the universality of Chinese grammar study. Through the above study, we could not only get a deeper understanding of the using characteristics and regular patterns of the Cantonese final particles, but also see the varied expression ways of the grammatical category in Chinese dialects. The study could be the reference study for the other dialectal spots in Guangdong dialects, and has profound significance in further understanding the characteristics of the Chinese language. |
