Fredric Jameson is one of the most famous American Neo-Marxist critics, postmodern theorists and cultural critic. Taking Jameson as a case study in this thesis, the author intends to grasp Jameson's Marxist critical system, then bring to light on Chinese literary criticism construction.Fredric Jameson produces his Neo-Marxist criticism from not only sticking to the Marxist metacommmentary, but also absorbing and systematizing the lO^-century Western Marxism, literary criticism and post-modern theories. In this thesis, three tasks are to be fulfilled: to have a complete understanding of Jameson's Neo-Marxist criticism; to interpret the relationship between Neo-Marxist criticism and post-modern society; to raise some points about constructing contemporary Chinese mode of literary criticism. In order to fully expound on Jameson's New-Marxist critical system, the author, referring to all his works and relative research materials, surveys its reality foundation and growing-up, gives a general introduction to Jameson's academic development and research achievements, and labels his identity as a Marxist and post-modernist..It is Jameson's Neo-Marxist criticism that is one of focus of this thesis. The author analyses the thoughts Jameson herited from other Western Marxists, hence the diversity and heterogeneity of Jameson's theoretical sources is clearly conveyed. Furthermore, the author gives some characteristics of Jameson's, namely the dominance of Marxist production mode; always historicize; dialectical spirits; and totality. The author holds the view that Neo-Marxist criticism puts stress on the priority of Marxism, on the other hand, it makes modern explanations of Marxism with the changed situation, While Jameson's contribution lies in his synthesizing Marxist ideological analysis and formalism, his establishing "poetics of social forms" by studying language, text, history, society, ideology and their relationships. After Jameson's Marxist hermeneutics is studied, its operatability also in sight. Then the author explains Jameson's ideological narrative theories which disclose ideological suppression and Utopian illusion in narrative text.. As far as the author is concerned, the connection of Jameson's Neo-Marxist criticism with post-modem theories is another emphasis in this thesis. In the author's view, Jameson takes post-modernism as the 'cultural dominance' in the late-capitalist society, and defends his theory of Marxist production mode which he argues with other post-modern theorists on,supplementing and expanding Marxist theory of class, capital and value, he also raises some expert views on the characteristics of post-modernism, its relevance to realism and modernism. Through systematic analysis on Jameson's post-modern theories, the author claims that Marxism is profoundly related to post-modernism and can provide further reflections and deeper understandings for post-modernism. Moreover, Jameson's post-modem cultural theories and his critical practice in the field of architecture and movie are also elucidated. After that, the author points out that it's Jameson's combining Marxism with cultural studies, and reconstructing Marxist criticism in the context of post-modernism that make up his another contribution. Moreover, the stand he takes on the third-world culture and the national allegory he raises about the third-world literature constitute his great efforts to seek for the opportunity to develop the new culture of human kind against a background of post-modernism.Just as what we have mentioned above, this thesis is not confined to the study of Jameson, and the author has further concerns. She sets forth her conception of cultural-formal criticism after making an analysis on the similarities and dissimilarities between Chinese and Western post-modern contexts, as well as the situation of present Chinese literary criticism. As for the author, the cultural-formal criticism is characterized by uniting cultural perception with formal aesthetics , and the critical mode with multiple per... |
