Awakening And Corresponding: The Forming Of Parole Life.

From the early nineteenth century to the middle of the twentieth century, a world-renowned revitalization movement of Chinese Miao nationality culture was appeared in Stone Gateway, Guizhou Province, which was launched by British missionary Samuel Pollard and achieved by him and his Han and Miao nationality workmates who were leaded by him. They created an educational miracle in Shi Men Kan, where remained closed and illiterate for thousands of years. Just in five decades, this place has turned out two Doctors, more than thirty undergraduates and thousands of persons with high school educational level. Nowadays, even a lady older than ninety year-old can speak a few words in English. They created Miao Script, changed Hua Miao nationality's history which just had language without letters. They opened a way to Chinese recent bilingual education, raised a giant tide of nationwide reading in Stone Gateway area, etc. Hu Jintao, the secretary of Guizhou Provincial Party Committee at that time, said:"(It) achieved non-conventional development in education." Actually, the education happened in Stone Gateway is just a primary functional literacy. It seems easy but awakens Hua Miao nationality's sense of life, produces unimaginable effects. Through the arrangement of cases, the current research aims to answer the question "what is Chinese?" from the view of existence of life and the reason of the existence.This thesis consists of five chapters.Chapter one is an introduction. This chapter presents a general introduction from three aspects, including related background of research object, which clarify significance and value of the selected topic, choosing of narrative research methods.Chapter two is adoption of Field Theory. This part is the base of this research, which sets a concrete framework and establishes a tone for the research.Chapter three is Story of stone gateway. Concrete is divided into three.The first quarter:Space Field. According to the practical matter of research object, the space field in Stone Gateway is divided into natural space, school space and public space. This part makes a detailed ethnography description to them, fully displaying life attitude, interacting and developments and changes in three spaces. In this part, the description of natural space focuses on space characteristics and social structure of Stone Gateway, analyzes the interrelation between natural space and social structure, and takes a view of form and appeal of Parole Life under this background. The description of school space aims at insetting of new order and new structure, confrontation between new and old structure, especially presents life attitude of human in this transition. The description of public space mainly presents the essence of education in public space, which is a shifting of new structure. This part sets a spatial position for current research which is the base of education in Stone Gateway.The second quarter:Belief Field. This chapter describes local primitive religion, foreign Christian and Confucianism in Stone Gateway, the key point of which is the form and effect of function of religion, and Hua Miao nationality's life attitude in different religions, rather than religion itself. This part also describes the interactions among different religions, tries to find out the rule of interaction, and aims to convey the relation configuration between belief and life appeal. For this purpose, this chapter makes a dialectical analysis for each belief, points out that belief is the indispensable biological element in a certain space and time.The third quarter:Script Field. This chapter makes a detailed description on creating Miao Script, emphatically introduces the elements absorbed and adopted by Miao Script, the borrowing from Chinese and English character, and the localization tendency presented by foreign elements in the process of creating Miao Script. The process of creating Miao Script is a reappearance process of historical memory, life experience and emotional expression of Hua Miao nationality, which is found to be the forming of Parole in life experience, loaded many cultural elements such as profound emotional experience, life appeal and historical memory. Miao Script arouses strong life appeal to ethnic group identity and establishment of life qualification of Hua Miao nationality.Chapter four is The story behind the story. Based on those ethnography descriptions in chapter two, three and four, this chapter puts forward a new idea that Chinese is the forming of Parole Life, and makes a definition on it. It shows that Chinese is not just wizened letters without flesh, blood and soul, but the forming of living life experience. This new idea reflects the co-existent relationship between Chinese and life; presents what Chinese really is, points a direction for Chinese development.Chapter five is Narrative, time and history. This chapter time concept, the paper from the deep structure of the narrative stone gateway," Forming of Parole Life" provide philosophical basis.As a conclusion, the last part takes a reversed view on the forming of Parole Life to recognize the vivid life attitude behind letters more clearly, and to be vigilant about "only letters are concerned". The range of this research is also stated in this part.
