Teaching Chinese characters to foreigners is one of the most important part of Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language(TCFL). The problem that teaching and learning Chinese characters is a hard work has been most discussed in the field of TCFL, but has not been solved.Chinese Characters study is a subject that takes Chinese characters noumenon as its main direction of studying, which focuses on forms of Chinese characters. Based on the above thinking, contemporary scholars have put forth to the theory of Chinese characters formation" which mainly studies on the forming and developing rules of Chinese characters, including the way the individual characters form and the rules existing in the formation system of Chinese characters.This thesis intends to explore the guiding function of the theory of Chinese characters formation in teaching Chinese characters as a foreign language and solve the problems in teaching.The main contents of this thesis are as follows:. Chapterâ… is mainly about the formation and development of relations between forms and meanings of Chinese characters.It is believed that the main function of Chinese characters is to express the meaning, with presenting sounds and marking as the auxiliary functions. So the meaning function of Chinese characters should be able to reflect the features of Chinese characters themselves.The relation between visual symbols and meanings has began to take shape at the initial stage of Chinese characters development. Then hieroglyphs gradually generated,laiding the foundation of the ideographic Chinese characters, after which pictophonetic method of word formation---- phonetic loan characters appeared. Phonetic loan characters went from prosperity to decline, showing that character symbols, only representing sounds, cannot suit Chinese language,thus a new form--- the pictophonetic method of word formation appeared. Pictophonetic characters are produced in quality, showing that the formation of radicals and the relation of forms and meanings are becoming more and more stable.Chapterâ…¡has a discussion on the properties and composition of modern Chinese characters. In Sectionâ… &â…¡, it will explore meaning function of radicals as well as meanings and sound function of Phonetics.Chinese characters extend a wide range of radicals which include conceptual meaning, extended meaning, and cultural meaning.The meaning function of Chinese radicals is more well-preserved, which helps teachers to adopt motivation teaching method and reduce rote learning and memory. Sound function of phonetics is poor, but there are still some functions that can be used. For example,some phonetics possesses sound functions which could be tapped.In Sectionâ…¢, it will go into the signal trend of Chinese characters. It is our belief that modern Chinese characters are far from signed the most characters and most symbols have some motivation relations between the characters' sounds and meanings, which could be fully used to serve to Chinese characters teaching.Major components of Chinese characters including strokes, components, stroke order and the formation pattern are mainly involved in Sectionâ…£.Stroke teaching should adopt hierarchical teaching, based on basic strokes and combination of strokes of Chinese characters.Chinese components are separable with specific split principles--- two cases can be split and the other two cases are not split.There are still a large number of components including radical components,phonetic components, signal components and labeling components. Radical components possess a powerful configuration ability though they are in small quantities,which should be made good use of in teaching. And the emphasis of teaching should be on the radical components and their features.Stroke order teaching will be reconsidered.Wang Ning (Outline 133)said that:it is not necessary to force some special characters have the same standard.But general rules of pen moves can not be violated. It is the right way to divide stroke order teaching into two stages:first, grasp the basic rules and their application in Chinese characters components and develop basic writing skills. second, learn the art of calligraphy and form a unique writing style.According to the current situation of modern Chinese characters, seven formation patterns are concluded, with Pictophonetic characters accounting for 55.8348%.Compared with the phonetics,the radicals obviously shows continuity and abrasion resistance during Pictophonetic characters developing against various influence factors.It has been found that more than three-quarters of 2,905 Chinese characters have their motivations and there is no need to learn them by rote memory.In Sectionâ…¤,it will discuss erroneous transformation of Chinese Characters and motivation reconstruction.Motivation reconstruction reflects the features of ideographic characters in unity of form and meaning, and is in line with the psychological characteristics of Han People guessing the meaning when seeing the character's forms.Chapterâ…¢is about features of modern Chinese characters'forms and Chinese characters teaching.How to teach radicals and phonetic as well as the motivation factors in radicals, phonetics and signal components will be discussed to explore a way to level down difficulty in learning Chinese characters.Conclusion:The teaching discussion in the thesis- how to link the sound with the meaning of Chinese characters and enable students to grasp Chinese characters forms and the relation between forms,sounds and meanings is only a small part of the entire teaching system.Therefore, this thesis will solve the related problems in two ways. First, analyze the common features of Chinese characters elements:strokes, components, formation pattern and other aspects, so that students understand the objective elements of Chinese characters.Second, analyze the relation between forms, sounds and meanings and form a channel for students to learn the relations between form-meaning and form-sound- meaning as well as enable them to understand the internal relations of Chinese characters,by which it will raise students' interest and learning efficiency.
