"Coastline Literature Writing"is a totally new concept originated by this dissertation, which studies "the Coastline Literature Writing and Drawing" of the Jinmen legend Lin Shumei. Since there are few drawings of Lin Shumei being passed down, the dissertation focuses mainly on his writing.Lin Shumei (1808-1851) was named Guangqian, with the first style Shumei, which is more often used, his second style Shifu and the literary name is Xiayun. He was born at Jinmen (Now Jinmen County, Fujian Province). He was originally from the family of Chen, but when he was one year old, he was adopted by the family of Lin. The heavy task of inheriting the two family and the dilemma of blood linkage annoyed Lin Shumei all his life. With special growing environment and peculiar experience, he spent his whole life in places along Fujian Coastline.Lin Shumei's father rose from the ranks and later served as the Deputy General of the Chinese Navy. Early when he was a teenager, Lin Shumei has accompanied his father guarding the navy fortress of Fujian Sea. In the windy waves, he sailed to Taiwan twice. During the Opium Wars, he joined the army to fight the British Invaders. Later in his life, he served as Lin Zexu's Consultant and being dubbed by Lin Zexu as "State Scholar" and "Treasure of the South". He died at the age of 44.Lin Shumei is an expert in poetry, classical Chinese and drawing and meanwhile be proficient at seal cutting. He has published dozens of books such as First Edition of Xiaoyun Poems, First Edition of Xiaoyun Prose and Xiaoyun Seal Cutting. Detailed invstigation of Lin Shumei's works and drawings is the literary base in completing the study of Lin Shumei's coastline literary writing and drawing.Lin Shumei's writing focus on the coastline and the coastline is indispensable to his drawing. The history of the islands, the resorts on the sea and mountains, information about Taiwan, battles at Xiamen, coastline poem interchange among poetry societies and biographies of coastline heroes are all included in the coastline literary writing of Lin Shumei.Lin Shumei's coastline writing are divided into two categories:one is practical drawing and the other is artistic portraits. The practical drawings concerns mainly coastline defense; the artistic drawings are about coastline heroes and coastline stories. One of the typical features of Lin Shumei's drawings is drawing with inscription of poems and the fine match of poems and drawings is one of the traits of his poems.Lin Shumei's poems are not limited to one style, but always solemn and stirring with direct expression with intense patriotic enthusiasm; his achievement in the field of classical Chinese is more outstanding as a comparison. Lin Shumei learned to write classical Chinese from Zhou Kai's Yanghu Style (who's from Fuyang) first and later from Gao Shuran, the second generation disciple of Fujian Classical Chinese Expert Zhu Shixiu. However, Lin Shumei's style is not merely an inheritant of Yanghu Style nor of the style of Zhu Shixiu and Gao Shuran's classical Chinese. His coastline literary writing has established an unique manner which has been exalted to the realm which shows the grandeur of Huanghe and Changjiang and is soul stirring.
