BACKGROUNDOsteophytes are osteo-cartilaginous neoplastic tissues forming mostly at the articular margin. Stimulating factors involved in the development of osteophytes include mechanical factors, growth factors, and chondrocyte apoptosis, of which growth factors may be of most importance. TGF-β1, IGF-1 and BMP-2 have been found to be involved in the development of osteophytes. However, there is little knowledge as to how these factors function in the development of osteophytes. As the development of osteophytes is an ideal in vivo model to pursue chondrocyte differentiation from pluripotent mesenchymal cells to chondrocytes, So research in the development of osteophyte and how those growth factors such as TGF-β1, IGF-1 and BMP-2 function in the process could be of clinical significance. It enable us more insight into not only the role of these growth factors in the development of chondrogenesis, but also the role of these growth factors the in the development of osteoarthritis. ObjectiveTo investigate the development of osteophytes by examining the expression of collagen type Ⅰ,Ⅱ,Ⅹ, and GAGs in the different osteophytes. To investigate the role of TGF-β1, IGF-1 and BMP-2 in the development of osteophytes by examing the specific expression of these growth factors in the different stages of osteophytes. MethodsThe study was performed on fifty specimens obtained from osteoarthritic patients who underment total knee arthoplasty. There are forty-four female and six male patients with an average age of sixty-nine years. Tissues samples were processed and sections were made. For all slices, HE and toluidine blue staingings and immunohistochemistry of...
