Howiinol A (1), a novel lactone isolated from the ethanolic extracts of the root and stem bark of Goniothamus howii Merr. (Annoaceae) in our laboratory has been shown to possess significant antitumor activities toward human tumor cells in vitro and in vivo and less toxicities. In order to provide more quantities of sample for further biological investigation, we have synthesized it in nine steps from a-D-glucoheptonic γ-lactone with an overall yield of 13.3%.
