Objective Japanese rabbits with Osteoarthritis or OA were modeled by ligation of femoral vein and treated with trigeminy treatment (Drugs for Fumigation or Washing Use, Tanbo Manipulation and Functional Exercises for Rehabilitation).The morphous changes of articulation of knee cartilage samples were observed with light microscope and transmission electron microscope and the apoptosis and proliferation of the cartilage cells were tested through flow cytometry, immunohistochemistry, in situ TUNEL and In situ hybridization. The effects of trigeminy treatment on rabbits with OA were observed; the differences between the effect of treating OA with trigeminy treatment alone and that of treating OA with Voltaren which was for external use were compared in order to provide evidences for the external use of Traditional Chinese Medicine in the treatment of OA.Methods 56 four-month aged healthy Japanese rabbit were randomly divided into 7 groups ( 8 for each group): 8 in the Normal group; the rest 48 rabbits were modeled by ligation of femoral vein and became models with OA of the right articulation of knee;Then they were divided into model group, fumigation group, functional exercise group, Tanbo manipulation group,trigeminy treatment group and voltaren group.4 weeks after the treatment, the articular cartilage was taken out; the lateral tibial plateau and the lateral condyles of the femur were taken to make paraffin section and extra thin section respectively; the left articular cartilage was used to carry out cartilage cell detachment. For the rest of the groups, the morphological changes stood in the middle. Opitcal observation: In the normal group, the articular cartilage cells were displayed in 4 layers; the cartilage cells were spherical or oval;the epicap was Fusiform in shape; the kytoplasm was evenly dyed, the cartilage matrix was gray-blue in colour and bone matrix was red in colour.
