Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a practical study whose theoretical basis was set forth in the Yellow Emperor's Canon of Internal Medicine. As a medical classic which embodies a vast reservoir of experience, it has obviously been deeply influenced by Daoist thinking. It is the purpose of this paper to point out the areas in which this kind of thinking expresses itself. Using the relationship between "the way (dao)" and "spirit", I will show how the two concepts are the very basis of the logical connection between TCM and Daoism. This theory comes from a new understanding of the theoretical characteristics in the Yellow Emperor's Canon of Internal Medicine. This paper will show how "spirit" is the origination point of the theory and techniques laid out in the classic. The personal spirit of an individual is not only a resonance between man and the heavens, a natural following of the way of heaven, but also the key pivotal point of such TCM concepts as 'enabling spirit', 'cultivating spirit', supplementing spirit', 'undivided spirit', etcetera. From the point of view of "spirit", the Yellow Emperor's Canon of Internal Medicine not only inherited the rational aspects of shamanism, but under the guidance of Daoism, also regrouped and improved the medicine of the day. The origins of TCM lie in shamanism, but were completed by Daoism using "the way" as the body and "spirit" as use. It is for this reason that one can use the Yellow Emperor's Canon of Internal Medicine to understand the essence of Laozi and why Laozi can be used to explicate the very essence and spirit of the Yellow Emperor's Canon of Internal Medicine. The relationship between "the way" and "spirit" in the Yellow Emperor's Canon of Internal Medicine has meant that it has occupied an extremely important position throughout the course of Daoist history. The theories of both Daoist TCM and internal alchemy (Immortal Studies) can be explained using the Yellow Emperor's Canon of Internal Medicine. Furthermore, research into internal alchemy can explain the philosophy, religion and science hidden within the theory of TCM and a thorough grasp of, "the unity of the way and the art" as understood by TCM is extremely valuable. The fact that the Yellow Emperor's Canon of Internal Medicine has its roots in Daoist culture means that one cannot ignore the humanities side of TCM. To date, research into TCM has focused only on the scientific aspects and in the process lost the very soul of the work and has lead to great losses in the art of TCM. For this reason, our ability to succeed to the inheritance of TCM and develop it further rests in a crucial way on our understanding and ability to use such concepts as "the way" and "spirit". If one has an accurate understanding of the relationship between the two, it can provide a model of understanding as to how modern science and the humanities connect and perhaps go a step further in promoting the generation of a new scientific method.
