We present a systematic summary of complete S-space coding theory systems, summarize the four basic criteria to measure neural coding, the basic concepts and properties of S-space, concluding the nervous system is processing information in the S-space. The computer simulation results based on three neuron models (H-H model, FHN model and the Chay model) show that neural spike train can form a well-ordered map --circle maps. With symbolic dynamics of circle maps, neural spike train can be described by symbol sequence in S-space. With the systematic analysis of the physiological neural pathway in the sensory system, we find the basic information processing unit of the nervous system from the perspective of S-space theory, and explain structuarlly different neural loop to perform the same function-degeneracy. Using computer simulations, we prove the degenerate measurement network in auditory system and in the olfactory system. Here,we point out that degeneracy is a ubiquitous biological property in the brain and furthermore,it is both necessary for and an inevitable outcome of the neural coding.
