Dr Hu Xishu (1898-1984)is a famours TCM(traditional Chinese medicine) doctor of classic formula school in modem China. His position in the TCM field particularly the classic formula school is definitely not to be neglected. His theories and experiences have been spreaded widely and profoundly now, as some of his notes, lecture records have been printed and published. From the documents including articles, records and notes we found the research on Dr Hu has been already started but the research on his own thinking method and cognition pattern has not been very much discussed or launched. The study on his contribution on medical thinking is therefore supposed to be engaged deeply. The meaning of "thinking" divides into two ways mainly. One is about the the outcome and output of human cognition on the objective world, literally the rational reflections, including conceptions, judgement, reasoning and category. The second is about the process of reflection, the course of psychological activity. The Medical thinking we discuss in this article is the process of psychological activity of analysis, synthesis, comparision, summarization, judgement and reasoning when the doctor s face up to various clinical phenomenon and medical theories. The concept of classic formula refers to the formulas and indications catalogue in the Shanghanzabinglun (Treatise on Exogenous Febrile Disease). The object of this research is the medical thinking of Dr Hu Xishu. His classic formula medicine thinking reflects the process of his cognition on clinical informations and phenomenon from the classic formula view to appoach the truth and the universal law. This article is based on the traditional philology research method, carding the documents and files of good authority to summarize the truth into points of view for analysis and elaboration. We choose some important documents which is written by Dr Hu himself, noted by Hu's student or transformed from Dr Hu's lecture audio record in chief as our research material. We especially focus on the firsthand documents. Of all documents the classic lecture record taken around 1982 is the most valuable and systemmatic document on Hu's academic thinking.Besides, this acticle adopts documents which have not been officially published yet including his lesson plans and notes collected by his students. We interviewed his students and researchers for more close contact with Dr Hu Xishu's life and experience, to better depict the profile of Hu from different dimensions. Then the process how his thinking formed and practiced into clinical reality is concluded The features, characteristics and values of his thinking are expounded and explained and at the end the significance of his unique thinking and the potential effect on the development of TCM are discussed. The main thread of his article is going through the following aspects and steps.Chapter 1:Summary of the current research on the TCM thinking, classic formula school and Dr Hu's academic achievements. This part is for depiction of Hu's proflie to provide foundation for the discussion about his medical cognition.Chapter 2:preface of the main object of the research based on the current research foundation.Chapter 3:analysis of the formation of Dr Hu's medical thinking pattern.First we retrace the history and the environment where Dr Hu was, to observe how those effected Hu in his whole life. Dr Hu insisted on clinical practice with classic formula and related theory from the beginning of his TCM study, even though he worked as an English teacher and administrators for a long time. After he quitted these jobs he went to beijing in his 30s and shouldered the responsbility of education and clinical works in Dongzhimen hospital and Beijing TCM colledge. His classical formula character was toned during the all the last time of his life.He devoted all his life into TCM and practice of classic formula, that is the root of his classic formula thinking. The second is to introduce his basic recognition on TCM theories. Dr Hu absopted various knowledge and always digested them with the classic formula system. For example Dr Hu thought the Huangdineijing has barely no direct relations with classic formula. The Shanghanlun (The treatise on Febrile Diseases) and Jingguiyaolue (Synopsis of the Golden Chamber) was in one book Shanghanzabinglun(Treatise on Exogenous Febrile Disease)because the theory is the same. The Wenbing (epidemic febrile disease)theories are not solid. Dr Hu learned much from western medicine and kampo medicine, that contributed a lot to his own thinking. The professionality of Dr Hu leaves us precious medical inheritance.Chapter 4:the clinical thinking process of Dr Hu. We analysize documents and the medical cases records, which reveals 3 types of angles Dr Hu always applied into his chinical thinking. The 3 angles are acurate diagnosis, syndrome differentiation and formula classification respectively. To better elaborate his thinking process we drawed pictures about his psychological activities according to analysis on his cases.Chapter 5:the conlusion of his thinking methods. From the formation of his thinking and the functioning of the 3 angles in the thinking process, we conclude Dr Hu's thinking partem into 4 methods including materilism, classification, logical deduction and dialectical analysis. In this part we review his thinking from the bird view.Chapter 6:conlusion of the features and characteristics of his thinking. Chapter 7:discussion of the value and the effect on the development of TCM. We apply the core of his thinking into the assumption of TCM education, clinical pratice and scientific research, to talk about the inspiration and meaningful points brought by his classical formula thinking.
