Color is a very important element in cartography, and it plays a significant role. Due to its important role that color plays, color management is an absolutely necessary process in cartography. As a kind of particular drawing, the color in maps is different from the ordinary graphs and images in nature. Color appearance model based color management can provide a stable and constant color environment for map editing and viewing. Thus it is significant to apply color appearance model based color management mechanism in map color management.On the basis of the analysis of the reasons that cause color inconsistent in map, color appearance model based color management mechanism in map color management is developed. According to the purposes that map color management aims, theoretical requirement s in map color management are summarized. And then two kinds of color management system, Clarification based self-adaptive map color separation system and Environment based self-adaptive map displaying system, are programmed to account for the different requirements.The full paper covers the following work:1. What are the problems with map color management and how to solve them. On the basis of the analysis of the reasons that cause map color representation uncertainness, the idea of applying color appearance model based color management mechanism in map color management is developed.2. The key technologies involved in color appearance model based color management. They are device characterization, gamut mapping and color appearance model. First, device characterization methods are introduced in brief. Then on the basis of the analysis of gamut mapping techniques, a fundamental principle to apply rendering intents is put forward. At last, the usability of available color appearance models is studied and an application principle of color appearance models is brought forward, say, the application of color appearance models should be from simple to complex, and the simplest model that most meets the demand is the best models.3. Map color management scheme. On the basis of the deep character study of E-map displaying and map printing, e-map displaying and map printing color management schemes of different levels are developed.4. Clarification based self-adaptive map color separation experiment and Environment based self-adaptive map displaying experiment.5. Programmed color appearance model based map self-adaptive color management system.
