For a long time, there exists an urgent demand for advanced security technology for national security and military security. Along with the development of national economic prosperity, the development of harmonious society and peaceful city also demand novel and reliable civil security technology. Traditional security technologies, mostly based on electromagnetic mechanisms, are limited by the inherent inconvenience in field installation and fragility to electromagnetic interference(EMI), and thus are incapable of satisfying the rapid-varying and high-end demand in current security applications.It is an important trend to take optical fiber as distributed sensors installed along a long distance to detect environmental vibration signals and then monitor any intrusion. Thus a new category of security technology, optical-fiber perimeter security technology, comes into being. It’s helpful to the construction of low-carbon and environmental-friendly modern city to use low-energy-consumption optical fiber as passive detectors in massive security applications. Otherwise, optical fiber sensor has features such as indifference to EMI, adaptability to field applications and flexibility in installations, making it suitable to the high-grade national and military security applicationsIn this paper, aiming at the ascendant application of perimeter security, a thorough study on the optical interference module based on the white-light interference technology, optoelectric detecting module and light source is carried out. A novel installation to use encoded optical-fiber cables as distributed sensors is proposed and successful practical application based on this encoded-installation has been realized. Then an innovative technique to adopt wavelength-division multiplexing(WDM) in the deployment of optical-fiber sensors in security zones is suggested, which is hopeful to efficiently lower the difficulty in field installation. A database for pattern recognition is constructed to analyze and recognize the intrusion behavior. The key technical problems in the engineering of optical-fiber perimeter security systems, such as energy consumption and the massive usage of optical-fiber cables in field installations are solved.Based on the previous study, long-distance optical-fiber perimeter security systems have been developed and successful applied to practical security projects. Through filed testing and long-term adjustment, the technology has been improved. The technological design and innovation installation method in this optical-fiber perimeter system is verified in practical applications. Great social benefit and economic benefit come after the industrialization of this technology.
