This article attempts to explore the experimental essence and self-orientation of the basis of design education in a modernist context utilizing a combination of existing historical files and current research accomplishments, the Ulm School of Design foundation courses being the research object. Tracing, their heritage to Bauhaus foundation courses, Ulm School of Design foundation courses not only managed to integrate the teaching methods of Bauhaus courses and ingrain them with distinct Ulm School of Design characteristics, but also impacted on the subsequent development process of Modern design education.During the development and formation process of educational ideology at the Ulm School of Design, representative figures such as Max Bill, Tomás Maldonado and Josef Albers were particularly important to the transformation of foundation courses at the Academy. Together with educational practices from Walter Peterhans, Anthony Fr?shaug and others who constituted an important part of the foundation courses at the Ulm School of Design. In this article, the development path of foundation courses at the Ulm School of Design is explored with the personal art of educators and their practices in design education utilized as the research method. The Ulm School of Design had been hailed as the ‘Second Milestone’ after the Bauhaus in the history of design education in Germany. The in-depth study of its foundation courses fills a gap in current research which provides a case study that has reference value for contemporary design education in China.
