It’s a historical phenomenon of great significances that a large number of young intellectuals going to Yan’an during the initial period of Anti-Japanese War. This dissertation, with this phenomenon as its object of work, aims to reveal the deep-level reason of this phenomenon through studying why and how the young intellectuals in large numbers overcome all kinds of hardships and went to Yan’anduring the initial period of Anti-Japanese War. The reasons of choosing this subject are:first comes to the academic value. Works and articles researching the intellectuals going to Yan’an(after their arrival to Yan’an have existed in large quantity. But the systematic study on reasons and process of intellectuals going to Yan’an has not yet come out. Second lies in its realistic significance. The ideal and belief matter greatly to the future and fate of a country. The youth in the war times sacrificed themselves for the country with ideal and hot blood. What can the youth in the peace times learn from it and construct our country with full confidence? The Communist Party of China has attracted a multitude of young intellectuals by means of ideal and belief. Today, as the ruling party, how can C.P.C attract the young intellectuals in large numbers through ideal and belief? We could draw some enlightenment from the study of this work.This dissertation consists of introduction, body and epilogue.The introduction reflects the research status regarding young intellectuals going to Yan’an during the initial period of Anti-Japanese War. Although with no specific and systematic research concerning it available, a lot of monographs and articles studying on Yan’an intellectuals broaden the vision and thinking of this dissertation. This sector also reflects the relevant theories of intellectuals both domestically and abroad and the study of specific persons and events to get the comprehensive academic trends as well as deepen the study the young intellectuals’ family origins, political status, the motivations and reasons of their going to Yan’an, etc.There are five chapters in the body. It discussed the main ideas of this dissertation in a logical sequence of the general situation of young intellectuals going to Yan’an, the influences of situation in the initial period of Anti-Japanese War an objective factors upon them, personal reasons and process of they going to Yan’an. Chapter one reflects the concepts and connotations of intellectuals, and points out the characteristics of Chinese intellectuals in contemporary and modern times from the perspective of comparing the similarities and differences between of western and Chinese intellectuals. This chapter defines the young intellectuals going to Yan’an during the initial period of Anti-Japanese War from four aspects of time, space, age and education level as follows:the time period is from September 18th Incident to the Rectification Movement in Yan’an in the year of 1942, and is mainly from the breakout of full-scale Anti-Japanese War in 1937 to the eve of the First Anti-Communist Movement Climax by the Kuo Min Tang(K.M.T) in 1939; the space aspects refers mainly to those young intellectuals went to Yan’an; as for the age, the young intellectuals are basically teenagers or in their twenties; the education level refers mainly to the middle school or above, including those dropouts due to wars after entering middle school. This part also analyzes the intellectuals’population, status, regional source, etc. According to the statistics, around four hundred thousand young intellectuals went to Yan’an in the initial period of Anti-Japanese War. These intellectuals have the family sources of overseas Chinese, landlord bureaucratic, warlords, bourgeoisie, petty bourgeoisie, teacher, farmer, etc. The major of them comes from the areas of overseas, enemy-occupied areas, K.M.T-occupied areas and Anti-Japanese War bases. It embodies the universality of young intellectuals’sources.Chapter two analyzes the deep influences upon young intellectuals’ political standpoints and choices macroscopically and microscopically. The factors include domestic and international situations in the initial period of Anti-Japanese War, policies of C.P.C and K.M.T. With the deepening of Japanese aggression, the Anti-Japanese policy changes of K.M.T and C.P.C, and the demonstration of leadership efficiency in construction of the two parties, the young intellectuals developed their own judgments and choices between the two parties. This is the historical and logical start of the young intellectuals going to Yan’an. By this analysis, the dissertation studies the reasons of the young intellectuals giving up favorable conditions and treatments provided by K.M.T and choosing C.P.C and Yan’an in such hardships in terms of natural and living conditions.Chapter three and four analyzes the objective and subjective reasons of young intellectuals going to Yan’an. The objective factors are favorable policy towards intellectuals by C.P.C, the left-wing culture, the enlightenment of Anti-Japanese National Salvation Movement and inspiration of advanced figures, etc. Personal reasons refer to Communism ideal and belief in C.P.C leadership in Anti-Japanese war, pursuit of new life and development, influences of family, teachers and friends, and early life experiences, marriage and safety, etc. These objective and personal factors promoted young intellectuals to go to Yan’an. The fifth chapter discusses the process of young intellectuals going to Yan’an including the preparation, economical support and the whole course of their ways to Yan’an. It’s the logical extension of the third and fourth chapters. By doing so, all sectors of the dissertation make up to an organic integrity. This dissertation emphatically analyzes typical characters such as Ding Ling, Li Rui, He Fang, Feng Lanrui, Zeng Yanxin, Gong Peng, Li Xin, Wang Zhongfang, Chen Bo’er, Zhao Ge, Liu Guangjun and his sister, etc. To get the first-hand material, the author of this dissertation has visited those young intellectuals going to Yan’anwhich are still alive and in good health including Li Rui, He Fang, Feng Lanrui, Zeng Yanxin, Xiao Yiping, etc. The dissertation analyzes their family origin, education background, revolutionary activities as well as enlightenment education toward them, their ideal pursuit and thinking to reveal the basic condition of young" intellectuals going to Yan’an during the initial period of Anti-Japanese War.The epilogue briefly analyzes the reversement among some young intellectuals after their arrival to Yan’an. Some chose to leave Yan’an and never go back to it even after they have overcome many hardships going to Yan’an. Some returned to Yan’an after leaving it through encountering hardships and doing the comparison and weighing between C.P.C and K.M.T. These are not mainstreams in the young intellectuals going to Yan’an, but they are objective historical facts.
