This paper studies the texts of classical Chinese criticism by Jin Sh eng-Tan. The paper presents a general analysis of the characteristics of the form and content of his criticism, as a means of studying the role of classical Chinese criticism in the general system of literary criticism by Jin Sheng-Tan. Additionally, it aspires to further the discussion in t he study of Jin Sheng-tan.This paper consists of five chapters.Chapter One is the introduction. The introduction includes an overvie w of previous research and points out its problem areas. In addition, cha pter1defines the general scope of this paper and explains the research methods.Chapter Two analyzes Jin Sheng-Tan’s view of literature and his unde rstanding of classical Chinese texts in detail. The manner in which Jin S heng-Tan viewed literature greatly influenced critical theory as a whole. This paper explores the relationship between the formation of his views and his critical work. Furthermore, there are two basic ideas in his unde rstanding of classics. One of them is that traditional morality is fundam ental for classical texts. The other one is that classical Chinese texts can be viewed as the basis for literary writing in general.Chapter Three concentrates on analyzing Jin Sheng-Tan’s methodology of criticism of classical texts. This chapter can be divided into three p arts. First, his idea of choosing texts and their characteristic features are analyzed. This includes the understanding of representative classica1works as reviewed by him. Second, the method of criticism by which he a pproached his criticisms of texts is analyzed. In this analysis, Jin Shen g-Tan’s sense of sovereignty as a literary critic is investigated. Third, the chapter concentrates on his form of evaluating classical texts. Thro ugh this, the method of comprehensively employing preceding approaches to criticizing classical texts is reviewed. Chapter Four analyzes the characteristics of the contents of Jin Shen g-Tan’s criticism of classical texts from the critical theory perspectiv e. First, it analyzes in detail which parts of the theory on classical te xts Jin Sheng-Tan inherited from the previous critics. Within this analys is, the characteristics of the historical development of classical texts as well as the writing style and characteristics specific to authors in e ach historical period are identified. Second, the theoretical value of Ji n Sheng-Tan’s criticism of classical texts is indicated. Jin Sheng-Tan e mphasized the following two characteristics to enhance the value of class ical texts. One is the relatedness of perceiving reality and art, and the other, the practical value of classical texts. He claimed that the artis tic reflection of classical texts depends on the expressions of reality. Additionally, the practical value of classical texts is combined with the ir educational aspects, as the appreciation of reading and development of writers is described in detail in the criticism.Chapter Five concentrates on investigating the artistic merit of styl e and critical language of Jin Sheng-Tan’s criticism. He pointed out num erous writing techniques that the authors of classical texts used. This c hapter reviews the sentence norms and structure of classical texts. Final ly, the artistic merit of Jin Sheng-Tan’s critical language is explored.This paper estimates the substantive aspects and value of Jin Sheng-T an’s criticism, as well as his role in literary criticism worldwide and his contribution to criticism of classical Chinese texts. |
