Guided by Pyricularia oryzae bioassay model, the anticancer constituents of Actinopyga lecanora and Acolochirus inornatus have been investigated by various chromatography methods including LPLC, MPLC, HPLC on silica gel, ODS RP C-18 and Zorbax SB C-18 respectively. Twenty-two compounds were isolated and structures of seventeen compounds were elucidated by chemical and spectral analysis.Fifteen saponins showed activity against Pyricularia oryzae and exhibit significant cytotoxicity against cultured tumor cell lines of HL 60 or BEL 7402. Our studies focused on bioactive saponins of sea cumcumbers (Actinopyga lecanora and Acolochirus inornatus) have provided valuable leads for pursuing new antitumor drugs, and established a homebase for further development of the sea cucumbers with abundant resources in Chinese sea.
