The importance of assessment the Quality of Life (QOL) has become more and more apparent along with the change in disease pattern, concept of health and medical model. There are two requirements of FDA: First the QOL is a kind of requirement for approval of new anticancer drug in regulations promulgated. The second the clinical trial endpoints should include QOL.The study of QOL is just starting in China. As cultural differences between China and The Western World may affect the content of QOL, it is necessary to develop scales for QOL assessment, that are specifically suitable to Chinese people and presented in Chinese. This report concerns the development of a new instrument in Chinese which we call the scale of QOL for Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma (SQOL--NPC).The SQOL--NPC was designed according to the following criteria:1. The contents of the SQOL--NPC were based on the WHO definition of health. The instrument should be comprehensive, covering an adequate range of different QOL dimensions;2. Specifically developed for nasopharyngeal carcinoma patients, its items should reflect the domains that are important to NPC patients;3. It should be quantitative, leading to several dimensional scores of QOL, besides separate item-scores and an overall one;4. It should be simple, and short, easy to understand and operate;5. It should be valid and reliable, and sensititive to changes of...
