SECTION 1 CLINICAL STUDY OF DIAGNOSING PRIMARY BREAST CANCER BY PET/CT USING FLUORINE-18-FLUORODEOXYGLUCOSEObjective The aim of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy and clinical value of positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) using fluorine-18-fluorodeoxyglucose(18F-FDG) for the diagnosis of primary breast cancer. Methods Forty-two patients with breast masses suggestive of breast cancer by physical examination or mammography, underwent 18F-FDG PET/CT imaging before primary therapy. The age of these patients varied from 20 to 72 years old, with a medium age of 44 years. PET/CT images of the breast were analyzed visually and quantitatively for assessment of regional FDG uptake. Regional FDG uptake in breast tissue was visually classified in three grade: PET image with regional FDG uptake within the background activity of normal breast tissue were considered grade 1, defined as benign. PET image with moderate increased FDG uptake were considered grade 2, defined as malignancy if CT image showed an irregular mass with high-density, ill-defined or spiculated margins. cases with intense increased FDG uptake were considered grade 3, represented malignancy. PET/CT scans were evaluated as benign or malignancy by two nuclear medicine physicians, a consensus interpretation was reached for each... |
