Objective To establish chronic heart failure(CHF) rabbit model by ligation of ventricular branch of the left coronary arteries.These models were provided to investigate the atrial ionic remodeling.The effects of irbesartan on the heart function and atrial structure were evaluated.Methods A total of 90 rabbits were randomly divided into three groups,the group 1 rabbits suffered from operations but left coronary arteries were not ligated,which was called sham-operated group(S group). The group 2 rabbits suffered from ligation of ventricular branch of the left coronary arteries,which was defined as CHF group(HF group). The group 3 rabbits suffered the same operation as the group 2, irbesartan was invested the second day after operation,which was defined irbesartan group(I group).After 12 weeks,tht mortality rate and the signs of heart failure in 3 groups were evaluated. Left ventricular end-systolic diameter (LVESD), left ventricular end-diastolic diameter (LVEDD), left ventricular ejection fraction (EF) and left atriam diameter(LAD) were obtained using echocardiography technipue before the operation and after 12 weeks. The pleural fluid,ascites wre evaluated and body weight(BW),heart weight(HW),liver weight and lung wet weight were investigated after the rabbits were killed .The atrial cell membrane capacitances were read directly in patch -clamp. Result Four rabbits died in S group,ten rabbits died in HF group and nine rabbits died in I group.The total mortality rate was 25.56 percents. The mortality rate in the HF group was as same as that in I group.In 12 weeks the HW/BW,liver weight/BW,lung wet weight/BW,LVEDD,LVESD in the HF group and I group were significantly higher than that those in S group after 12 weeks.The lung wet weight/BW,LVEDD,LVESD in the I group were lower than those in HF group.
