Acne vulgaris is a chronic inflammatory skin disease of the pilosebaceous gland unit that occurs more frequently among young people . As sites of the predilection include face, neck and upper trunk, Physical and mental health of patients with acne are greatly affected. Its etiology is complicated and still not clarified completely. The driving forces for the development of acne are excessive sebum production , ductal cornifcation, propionibacterium acne colonization of the pilosebaceous duct and inflammation. Excessive sebum production is one of the major factors contributing to the formation of the primary lesions associated with acne.Exploring the pathogenesis of acne and finding cost-effective medicines with few side effects medicines are important in controlling acne. In our study we clinically investigated the health-related quality of life of patients with acne vulgaris and observed the effects of the Traditional Chinese Medicines Cryptotanshinone, Tanshinone IIA, Berberine, Baicalin on SZ95 sebocytes proliferation, lipid synthesis and androgen receptor(AR), 5 α -reductase and Δ 4,53 β -hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase(HSD) mRNA expression in vitro and to elucidate the possible mechanisms of these Traditional Chinese medicines in treating acne.
