Gastric carcinoma is one of the most common malignant tumors of gastrointestinal tract with high incidence and poor prognosis. The gastric carcinogenesis like other carcinomas is related to some genetic changes such as mutation, deletion, or translocation leading to defective and abnormal expression. The imbalance of several growth factors or disorder of signal pathway may contribute to the uncontroled tumor cell growth.Transforming growth factor β1 (TGF-β1) is an important factor involoved in the regulation of cell cycle. It is bifunctional, since it can either stimulate or inhibit proliferation, differentiation and other critical processes in cell function. It is wildly deemed as a growth-stimulatory factor for mesenchymal cells and a growth inhibitor for epithelial cells. Moreover , many studies have shown that TGF-β1 inhibited the cell growth of not only normal epithelial cells but also certain carcinoma cells such as colon carcinoma and breast carcinoma. therefore, it is likely that TGF-β1 acts as an autocrine growth inhibitor in carcinoma cells. It also has been hypothesized that loss of negative growth...
