Objective:1. To determine the normal distribution pattern of metabolites (NAA, Glu, Cr, Cho, mI) in the frontal lobe and limbic system of healthy adults using proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (~1H-MRS) at 3 Tesla.2. To find the characterisitics of metabolic changes in patients with depression through comparing ~1H-MRS differences in the frontal lobe and limbic system of depressed patients with age- and sex-matched controls.3. To analyse the neurochemical alterations in depressed rats by using ~1H-MRS at 14.7 Tesla, the aim was to discuss whether the chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) models could imitate the metabolic changes in depressed patients, and to evaluate the method of ~1H-MRS in study of depression.Methods:1. PROBE-J sequence (Magnetic Resonance in Medicine Vol.51P435-P440,2004) was performed on 72 volunteers who were divided into 2 groups(21-50,51-70) according to their age. What we studied were NAA/Cr, Glu/Cr, Cho/Cr and mI/Cr. Data were acquired from a voxel in left hippocampus, right hippocampus, anterior cingulate gyrus, posterior cingulate gyrus, left frontal white matter and right frontal white matter respectively. Metabolic ratios were compared between locations, ages and sexes.2. Thirty-two nonmedicated depressed patients and 32 matched control subjects were studied. Quantitative single-voxel ~1H-MRS examinations (PROBE-J) were performed using a 3.0T scanner. Proton spectra were acquired from a voxel in left hippocampus, right hippocampus, anterior cingulate gyrus, posterior cingulate gyrus,...
