In order to discover biological active compounds from rich Chinese plant sources and make full use of them, the chemical constituents of Calophyllum inophyllum and Calophyllum membranaceum were systematically separated with various chromatogr-raphic techniques.23 compounds were isolated from Calophyllum inophyllum and their structures were determined by spectroscopic methods. Three of them are triterpenes, they are friedelin (3), canophyllol (4), 3-friedelinol (5). Fourteen of them are xanthones, they are calophyllumin C (1), caloxanthone M (2), 1,5-dihydroxyxanthone (6), 4-hydroxyxanthone (7), 6-deoxyjacareubin (8), jacareubin (9), macluraxanthone (10 ), l,6-dihydroxy-5-methoxyxanthone ( 11 ), l-hydroxy-3,7-dimethoxyxanthone (12), brasilixanthoneB (13),1,3,5-trihydroxyxanthone (14 ), l,2,5-trihydroxy-3-methoxy-xanthone (15), l,3,5,6-tetrahydroxy-2-isoprenylxanthone (16), caloxanthone B (17). One flavonol is epicatachin (18). In addition there are five other compounds, they are P-sitosterol (19), daucosterol (20), p-hydroxy-benzoic acid (21), stigmasterol (22), n-hexacosa-nic acid (23). Compounds 1 and 2 are new compounds and compounds 12, 15 are obtained from this plant for the first time.27 compounds were isolated from Calophyllum membranaceum and their structures were identified by spectroscopic methods and chemical reaction. Compounds 24 and 27 were identified by X-ray crystallographic analysis. Nine of these compounds are triterpenes, they are membrantriterpene A ( 27 ), membrantriterpene B (28), friedelin (30), canophyllol (31), 3-friedelinol (32), taxaxerol (33), friedelolactone (34), oleanolic acid (35), ursolic acid (36). Thirteen of them are xanthones, they are membrandione A ( 24 ), membrandione B ( 25 )? membranxanthone A ( 26 ), 5-O-methyl-6-deoxyjacareubin ( 29), 6-deoxyjacareubin (37), jacareubin (38), caloxanthone C (39), guanandin (40), gaudichaudione H (41), 2-hydroxyxanthone (42), caloxanthone A (43), l,5-dimethoxy-6-deoxyjacareubin...
