Fusarin C (FC) is a mutagenic and carcinogenic myco-toxin which was isolated from Fusarium monitiforme culture extracts. Fusarium monitiforme occurs globally in a wide variety of plant hosts, and is one of the most prevalent fungi found on corn in Linxian, a high risk area for esophageal cancer. After gavaging of ~3H-FC to rats, the highest level of radioactivity was found in the intestine, stomach and liver, and lesser amounts were noted in the kidney, bladder, esophagus and spleen. The radioactivity in blood reached the peak at 3h after giving~3H-FC The total urinary and fecal excretions were found to be about 58.5% within 48h. 94.6% of FC was converted into metabolites after it had been metabolized in vivo.DNA-bi-nding of ~3H-FC was formed in explants of esophagus. The unscheduled DNA synthesis of rat esophageal epithelial cells was not induced by FC.FC-treated rat esophageal epithelial (REE) cells showed several characteristics of malignant transformation, colonies were formed after...
