Background: The theory of fetal origins of adult disease raised by Barker suggests that fetus retarded development may contribute to adult's hypertension. But the mechanisms remain unknown. Arterial compliance may be affected by the retarded uterus growth through lowering the accumulation of elastin scleroprotein in the aorta wall, and the reduced arterial compliance perhaps causes adult's hypertension in the babies with low birth weight. Unfortunately, evidence from field research is controversial.Methods and Subjects: A sample of 348 subjects from an un-randomly selected birth cohort consisting of 1848 cases is successfully examined. Pulse wave velocities (PWV) are measure in common carotid artery, femoral artery and foot dorsal artery by way of photoplethysmogram. Anthropological as well as biochemical measurements are made at the same time. Family and personal history of hypertension and CHD are reviewed by questionnaire.
