As an advanced life support technique, Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) plays a very important role to provide prolonged extracorporeal gas exchange and perfusion. It has been save thousands of lives with severe acute cardiopulmonary failure or congenital abnormities who were deem to die since being applied in clinic field. The survival rates of respiratory failure in newborn and children who accepted ECMO were higher than in adult, which inspired many pediatricians to use this innovative therapy.
